    Holy month of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This is the month during which Muslims’ holy book Quran was revealed, Hassan the second Shiite Imam was born, Prophets’ son in law Ali was murdered, a conclusive battle at Badr was won and Muslims are expected to fast. One of the main rituals of Islam, fasting is obligatory for all Muslims except with the sick, pregnant women and some travelers. In all cases once recovered or stopped travelling the missing days should be fasted.

The practice is observed for the whole month and ends with the celebration ‘Fitr’. The daily period of fasting starts at dawn and ends at sunset with no food, drink or sex during the fasting hours. Such self-control is believed to benefit the individuals by elevating spiritual nature or energy and is symbolic of an inner purification of the character. The believers must have a good intention (niyyat) in their mind when fasting. This intention must be pure and the ritual should be performed for the love of God only, not for sake of earthly gains or even the reward of paradise. Special acts of piety, such as the recitation of the entire Quran (one-thirtieth each night of the month) and prayers specific to Ramadan are performed privately or communally at the mosques. Alms are given to the needy and charitable people will provide free meals at sunset when ending the fast meals are consumed.

Fasting is a common ritual practiced by most religions and was known in the pre-Islamic Arabia. There were several Gnostic sects, Christian and Manichean missionaries that practiced fasting and were present in Arabia at the time of Prophet Muhammad. The Muslim fasting was originally based on the Jewish tradition. In Quran crossing of the Red Sea by the Jewish exodus from Egypt is called furghan meaning salvation. Each year Jews commemorate this furghan at Passover. However the fasting season is at Yom Kippur another Jewish holy day when the entire day is dedicated to praying and other religious observances. Since food can not be consumed during the prayers fasting is observed till the rituals are over. This is called the Day of Atonement by the Jews and happens on the tenth of the Jewish month Tishri.

After prophet’s migration to Medina, influenced by the Jewish tradition, the Muslim fasting happened at Passover mixing this day and Yom Kippur together. The fasting was established for the day of ‘Ashura’, the tenth of Muharam. However after the decisive and unexpected victory at the battle of Badr the Prophet declared that the fast at Passover was no longer obligatory for Muslims. Instead they were required to fast during Ramadan to commemorate their own furghan of Badr. The fast of Ramadan was observed for the first time in 625, and became one of the essential practices of Islam and a must for all Muslims. It is not obligatory for youngsters until they reach puberty however most practicing Muslims encourage their children to practice occasional fasting long before they reach that age.

Women during menstruation and up to forty days following childbirth and pregnant women are also exempt from fasting. However the missed days should be made up before the next Ramadan. The very old and the insane are permanently exempt from fasting.

The fasting starts at the beginning of the month when the moon is in conjunction with the sun illuminating the side of the moon away from the earth. In this position, the moon is known as new moon with its dark side facing the earth. By definition a new moon is not visible till it has orbited long enough to form a crescent. A lunar month is approximately 29.5 days and on average is one day shorter than a solar month. Therefore, the month of Ramadan comes 10 – 12 days earlier each year. Any observatory and astronomy center can provide detailed and exact information as to the start of the month. However many Muslims will not start fasting till the moon crescent is sighted.

For Muslims like Jews the day begins at sunset and ends at the next sunset. In this system the night comes before the day. If the new moon is sighted before the sunset fasting starts the next day, but if the moon is sighted after the sunset, the first day of Ramadan does not start until the next sunset. The same system is used to determine the ending of the month. If the new moon for the following month, Shawwal is sighted before the sunset, fasting ends at the sunset on that day. If it is sighted after the sunset, the fasting continues till next day.

People fasting will rise early before dawn to have a pre-fast breakfast (Sahari) and a more elaborate meal at the end of the fasting day called Iftar (Iftari). The first one being early in the morning is a family affair and normally consists of a large breakfast with previously prepared cold meals like koko, kofteh with flat bread, Feta cheese, eggs, bread and jam served with tea. Dates are always served with all religious rituals and are assumed to bring barakat (blessing). These were Prophet Muhammad’s favorite food and are used at most Muslim ceremonies. There is no prescribed food as such and it varies according to the taste and economic status of the participants. Iftar however is like a feast and if possible is consumed with other close members of the family clan, friends and neighbors. Independent religious gathering places like a Takeyeh may serve Iftari food for people attending the event with communal praying, recitations of Quran and preaching by the religious figures and other respected authorities mainly males.

Segregation of sexes is still practiced by many Muslims therefore in some traditional families and in the Mosques males and females will be seated separately. Volunteers perform acts of charity by preparing food in the kitchens and serving the needy with food donated by the charitable people. Ramadan is regarded as a festive month for most Muslims. Streets and shops will be decorated with lights and flowers. People will congratulate each other by saying ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ (blessed Ramadan). People are not expected to give up their daily routine and work despite the apparent hardships caused by fasting. In fact they are expected to carry on as usual and withstanding the hardships is regarded an act of self-discipline rather than an ascetic or withdrawal from the every day life.

The last 10 days are especially important because Quran was revealed in this month at the ‘Night of Power’ (lailat al-qadr). Quran is the foundation of Islam and the unadulterated word of God; it is the Divine Word par excellence. Each single verse of it is called ayat " sign" or miracle because Prophet brought forth these verses as Divine signs when his adversaries asked him for a miracle attesting to his prophecy. According to the Quran, the night of power is better than a thousand months put together. Some people will retreat into prayers during these last ten days. These are called days of i-tikaf or retreat and it ends with Id-i Fitr.

In this night while at a cave in Mount Hira (610AD), the Archangel Jebraeel (Gabriel) appeared to the Prophet with the first five verses of the first chapter, Surat al-Alaq. Muhammad’s appointment as a prophet is called Mabath , meaning the one appointed.

The belief in angles plays an important role in both theology and popular faith. Gabriel occupies the most important position among the angles and represents the Holy Spirit or the Trustworthy Spirit. For this reason he was chosen to convey the Divine message to the Prophet. Muslims believe that this divine communication is the final stage in a long series of contacts conducted through the prophets. It started with Adam and ended with Muhammad the seal of the prophets. Through these contacts humans were warned that their happiness lay in worshipping Allah and to tell them of the terrible consequences of disobedience. God’s final revelation was sent down on the night of power through his last messenger Prophet Muhammad.

This night of revelation is also known as the night of might, destiny and the precious night. This occasion is observed privately or in congregation by performing prayers special to the occasion taraweeh, recitation of Quran and acts of charity. The night is usually celebrated on one of the last odd nights in Ramadan. Most Muslims have accepted 27th of Ramadan as the correct date for this night. Shiites of Iran celebrate the night from 19th to the 21st of Ramadan. This is by design. It is said that prayers on this night are worth a thousand prayers on any other night; therefore to encourage people to pray on all these nights, the date remains unknown. Also the period coincides with Ali’s assassination and his subsequent death on the 21st. . For this reason Ramadan in more a month of mourning for the Shiites than celebration. The three nights from stabbing to death are known as the nights of Revival (Shab i Aheya) and are mourned privately or communally. People stay up all night recite special prayers and at times will hold the Quran on their head while praying loudly or crying.

Martyrdom is very important in Iranian Shiite ideology and Ali’s assassination and his death are mourned intensely by the devout Shiites. According to their account, when the Prophet died, leadership of the community was to pass on to Ali, his cousin and son-in-law. Muhammad had raised Ali as a child. He was the first male convert and fought bravely for the faith. He was a constant aide and when the prophet withdrew from Mecca under the cover of night to escape assassination in 622, Ali remained behind as a decoy in Muhammad’s bed. However Ali did not succeed as the immediate successor and only became the leader of the community after the death of the three first leaders, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman.

This was a time of major conflict between ruling clans, chaos caused by rapid expansion of Islam and a great power struggle between close relatives of the prophet including a brother-in-law of the prophet called Muawiya. He was the Governor of Syria and the winner at the end. A rebel group called Kharijites decided to assassin the three leaders, Ali, Muawiya and Amr ibn al-As. The last two survived.

Ali was assassinated while praying in the mosque of Kufa. The details of his martyrdom like those of his son Husayn have become legends remembered and mourned by Shiites ever since. The preachers in the mosques passionately and theatrically recap the events of the three nights and Ali’s foreknowledge of his death. On the 13th of Ramadan Ali told his son Husayn that he would soon die and gave him the name of his assassin Ibn Muljam. Though asked by others including Ibn Muljam himself to kill the assassin beforehand to prevent the tragedy, Ali refused. He went on the roof the night before his stabbing to sing munajat (whispering prayers). He sang to the stars and moon that they should intensify their light because he was leaving the world. The mourners are told how desperately his daughter tried to stop him. Even his sash got caught in the door and his robe fell open. Animals on the way to the mosque blocked his way and he refused and told them he was ready for his call.

At the mosque Ali met and woke up his assassin and commented about the hidden sword and they both prayed. At the second prostration (sijda) Ibn Muljam struck Ali and he fell forward into the mihrab (the niche in a mosque wall which orients one toward Mecca). He took some dirt from the floor of the niche to put on his wound. The angel Gabriel filled the air with the cry that ‘Ali was slain and the muezzins (those who call the faithful to prayer) took up the cry from the rooftops. The assassin was captured and brought to the wounded leader. Ali ordered him detained but comforted him that if he survived, Ibn Muljam would be set free. As he died, Ali ordered that the assassin should be executed with one blow only, for he had struck only one blow, and his family should not be molested. He was executed on the twenty-seventh.

The rhetorical forms of the tragedy as the preachers tell it emphasizes the moral themes of generosity, fairness and appropriate punishment. At the same time they support and intensify the rhetoric. The stabbing during prostration is symbolically very significant. Muslim daily prayer namaz includes different positioning while praying. Ali was stabbed during the second prostration. One meaning given to the prostration is that the first refers to " from dust we are created"; the worshiper then sits back, resting upon his haunches, which represents life. The second prostration refers to " and to dust we return"; the concluding act, rising to one’s feet represents the final judgement. Ali is stabbed during the second prostration and putting the dust of the mihrab on his wound symbolizes his return to dust and acceptance of his fate and God’s will. The preachers during this part of the story recite the verse from the Quran about man being from dust. At the end how Ali’s children mourned his death is passionately described and all participants are encouraged to cry loudly and express extreme sorrow.

The end of Ramadan is celebrated on the first day of the month of Shawwal with a great feast named Id-i Fitr. The feat of breaking the fast calls for a solemn prayer, Salat al-Id.

Most people will attend their local mosques for communal prayers. The last feast or Iftari is more elaborate and is quite often joined by family friends and neighbors. On this day the statutory alms marking the end of the fast (Zakat al-fitr) are given. The more prosperous families give to the poor a prescribed quantity of the customary food of the area as an act of piety.

In the past the occasion was celebrated with grandeur with the local rulers participating and people joyfully attending the occasion. Ibn Battuta, the Moroccan traveler in the 14th century describes Id-i Fitr in Tunis as follows; the Sultan fulfilled his customary duty of "leading a magnificent procession" of officials, courtiers, and soldiers. He proceeded from the citadel to a special outdoor praying ground (Musalla) that accommodated the crowds gathered for the prayers making the Breaking of the Fast". Even in the 19th century Iran the Monarchs attended some prayers in the major mosques. Throughout the 20th century the occasion became a community oriented one with less direct participation from the monarchy. The splendor of this feast is revived again with the supreme leader and high-ranking religious authorities participating zealously in the celebrations.

Practicing Muslims outside Iran observe the fasting and all the major events of the month. The mourning for Ali is normally done communally at the local mosques or other gathering places if there are no mosques. Id-i Fitr is usually spent in the company of other practicing Muslims with feasts, elaborate meals and prayers. Older children are encouraged to practice fasting, however this is not always possible with the busy school schedule. Sighting of the moon is barely observed and accurate information is obtained from observatories and local Muslim or Iranian media will announce the sunrise and sunset times according to the locality. In the absence of religious preachers the respected and learned members of the community perform the prayers. Women’s participation in organizing and administering such events has increased tremendously. Female preachers are appearing in greater numbers and youth are encouraged to participate at all community gatherings.

      Ramadan
What is the month of Ramadan in Islam and its significance?

Ruling in the Quran regarding Ramadan
      The Quran says:

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allahu Akbar: Allah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.”

      [al-Baqarah 2:185]

Commentary on the month of Ramadan
This blessed month is a great opportunity for goodness, barakah (blessing), worship and obedience towards Allah.

It is a great month, a noble season, a month in which hasanaat (rewards for good deeds) are multiplied and in which committing sayi’aat (bad deeds) is more serious than at other times. The gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the sinners’ repentance to Allah is accepted. It is a month whose beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness and its end is redemption from the Fire.

So give thanks to Him for the season of goodness and blessing that He has bestowed upon you, and for the means of bounty and various kinds of great blessings for which He has singled you out. Make the most of this blessed time by filling it with acts of worship and forsaking haraam things, so that you may attain a good life in this world and happiness after death.

For the sincere believer, every month is an occasion for worship and his whole life is spent in obeying Allah, but in the month of Ramadan he has even more motives to do good and his heart is even more focused on worship, and he turns even more to his Lord. By His grace, our generous Lord bestows His bounty upon the fasting believers and multiplies the reward for them on this blessed occasion, so He gives abundantly and rewards generously for righteous deeds.

      Time passes quickly
Days pass so quickly, as if they were mere moments. We welcomed Ramadan, then we bade it farewell, and only a short period of time passed and we are welcoming Ramadan again. So we should hasten to do good deeds in this month and strive to fill it with that which Allah is pleased with and with that which will help us on the Day when we meet Him.

How can we prepare for Ramadan?

We can prepare for Ramadan by taking stock of ourselves and recognizing our shortcomings in living up to the Shahaadatayn, or our shortcoming in fulfilling our duties, or our shortcomings in not keeping away from the desires and doubts that we may have fallen into…

We should set ourselves straight so that in Ramadan we will have a higher degree of faith. For faith increases and decreases. It increases through obedience to Allah and it decreases through disobedience and sin. The first act of obedience that a person should achieve is that of being a true slave of Allah and believing that there is none that is rightfully worshipped except Allah, so he directs all kinds of worship to Allah and does not associate anyone else in worship with Him. Each of us should realize that whatever has befallen him could not have missed him, and whatever missed him could not have befallen him, and that everything happens by the will and decree of Allah.

We should avoid everything that could undermine our commitment to the Shahaadatayn. This means keeping away from bid’ah (innovations) and things that have been introduced into the religion. We should also follow the principle of al-walaa’ wa’l-bara’ (loyalty and friendship vs. disavowal and enmity), by taking the believers as our friends and by regarding the kaafirs and hypocrites as enemies, and we should rejoice when the Muslims gain a victory over their enemies. We should follow the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions and adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the way of the Rightly-Guided Khulafa’ who came after him. We should love the Sunnah and love those who adhere to it and defend it, in whatever country they are and whatever colour or nationality they are.

After that we should take stock of ourselves and recognize our shortcomings in doing acts of worship such as praying in congregation, remembering Allah (dhikr), paying attention to the rights of neighbours, relatives and the Muslims, spreading the greeting of salaam, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, urging one another to follow the truth and be patient and steadfast in doing so, being patient in avoiding evil actions and in doing good deeds, and accepting the decree of Allah with patience.

Then we should take stock of ourselves and our sins and our following whims and desires. We should stop ourselves from persisting in that, whether the sin is great or small, whether it is a sin of the eye, by looking at that which Allah has forbidden; or by listening to music; or by walking to things of which Allah does not approve; or by using one's hands to srike in a manner with which Allah is not pleased; or by consuming things that Allah has forbidden such as riba (usury) and bribes, or any other means of consuming people’s wealth unlawfully.

We should never forget that Allah stretches forth His hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who sinned at night, and He stretches forth His hand at night to accept the repentance of those who sinned during the day. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqoon (the pious).

Those who spend (in Allah’s Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good‑doers).

And those who, when they have committed Faahishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; — and none can forgive sins but Allah — and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.

For such, the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders)”

        [Aal ‘Imraan 3:133-136]

“Say: “O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful”

        [al-Zumar 39:53]

“And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful”

        [al-Nisa’ 4:110]

By taking stock, repenting and seeking forgiveness, this is how we should welcome Ramadan. “The smart man is the one who takes stock of himself and strives to do that which will benefit him after death, and the helpless one is the one who follows his own whims and desires and engages in wishful thinking, (assuming that Allah will forgive him regardless of what he does and that he does not need to strive to good deeds).”

The month of Ramadan is the month of great gains and profits. The smart trader is the one who makes the most of special occasions to increase his profits. So make the most of this month by doing lots of acts of worship, praying a great deal, reading Qur’aan, forgiving people, being kind to others and giving charity to the poor.

In the month of Ramadan the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut. The devils are put in chains and a caller cries out each night, O seeker of good, proceed, O seeker of evil, desist.

So, O slaves of Allah, be among the people of good, following the path of your righteous forebears who were guided by the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so that we may end Ramadan with our sins forgiven and our righteous deeds accepted.

We should note that the month of Ramadan is the best of months.

        Ibn al-Qayyim said:

Another of example of that – i.e., of the differentiation between the things that Allah has created – is the fact that the month of Ramadan is superior to all other months, and the last ten nights are superior to the other nights.”

        Zaad al-Ma’aad, 1/56

This month is superior to others in four things:

1 – In it there is the best night of the year, which is Laylat al-Qadr. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al‑Qadr (Decree).

And what will make you know what the Night of Al‑Qadr (Decree) is?

The Night of Al‑Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).

Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees,

(All that night), there is peace (and goodness from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn”

        [al-Qadar 97:1-5]

So worship on this night is better than worshipping for a thousand months.

2 – In this month was revealed the best of Books to the best of the Prophets (peace be upon them). Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)”

        [al-Baqarah 2:185]

“We sent it (this Qur’aan) down on a blessed night [(i.e. the Night of Al‑Qadr) in the month of Ramadan — the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship].

Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments.

As a Command (or this Qur’aan or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers)”

        [al-Dukhaan 44:3-5]

It was narrated by Ahmad and by al-Tabaraani in al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer that Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Scriptures of Ibraaheem were sent down on the first of the month of Ramadan. The Tawraat was sent down on the sixth of Ramadan. The Injeel was sent down on the thirteenth of Ramadan. The Zaboor was sent down on the eighteenth of Ramadan, and the Qur’aan was sent down on the twenty-fourth of Ramadan.

        Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1575.

2 – In this month the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are chained up.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.” (Agreed upon).

Al-Nasaa’i narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are put in chains.”

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 471.

Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated in one report: “When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist. And Allah has those whom He redeems from the Fire, and that happens every night.”

Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 759.

If it is asked, how come we see many evil actions and sins committed in Ramadan, for if the devils are chained up that would not happen?

        The answer is that evil actions become less for those who observe the conditions and etiquette of fasting;

        or that the ones who are chained up are some of the devils – namely the rebellious ones – not all of them;

or that what is meant is that evil is reduced in Ramadan, which is a proven fact. If evil happens at this time, it is still less than at other times. Even if all of them (the devils) are chained up, that does not necessarily mean that no evil or sin will happen, because there are other causes of that besides the devils, such as evil souls, bad habits and the devils among mankind. Al-Fath, 4/145

4 – There are many kinds of worship in Ramadan, some of which are not done at other times, such as fasting, praying qiyaam, feeding the poor, i’tikaaf, sadaqah, and reading Qur’aan.

I ask Allah, the Exalted, the Almighty, to help us all to do that and to help us to fast and pray qiyaam, and to do acts of worship and to avoid doing evil. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

          Diet during Ramadan

          Abstract:
It is a globally recognized and foremost part of dietary guidelines that eating a variety of food using principles of moderation and balance. This is particularly true during the Islamic month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. To be healthy, one must consume food from the major food groups: bread and cereal, milk and dairy product, meat and bean, vegetable and fruit. During the month long fast of Ramadan the metabolic rate of a fasting person slows down and other regulatory mechanisms start functioning. Body and dietary fat is efficiently utilized. Consuming total food intake that is less than the total food intake during normal days is sufficient to maintain a person's health. Intake of fruits after a meal is strongly suggested. A balanced diet improves blood cholesterol profile, reduces gastric acidity, prevents constipation and other digestive problems, and contributes to an active and healthy life style. (Int. J. Ramadan Fasting Research, 3:1-6, 1999)

          INTRODUCTION

Fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadan can be good for one's health and personal development. Ramadan fasting is not just about disciplining the body to restrain from eating food and drinking water from predawn until sunset. The eyes, the ears, the tongue, and even the private parts are equally obligated to be restrained if a Muslim wants to gain the total rewards of fasting. Ramadan is also about restraining anger, doing good deeds, exercising personal discipline, and preparing oneself to serve as a good Muslim and a good person during and after Ramadan.

This is why the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him, Pbuh) has been attributed, by Hazrat Abu Hurairah in hadith, to say: "He who does not desist from obscene language and acting obscenely (during the period of fasting), Allah has no need that he didn't eat or drink." (Bukhari, Muslim). In another hadith by Hazrat Abu Harairah, the Prophet (Pbuh) said: "Fasting is not only from food and drink, fasting is to refrain from obscene (acts). If someone verbally abuses you or acts ignorantly toward you, say (to them) 'I am fasting; I am fasting." (Ibn Khuzaoinah).

Restraint from food, water, and undesirable behavior makes a person more mentally disciplined and less prone to unhealthy behavior. In an investigation in Jordan (1), a significant reduction of parasuicidal cases was noted during the month of Ramadan. In the United Kingdom, the Ramadan model has been used by various health departments and organizations to reduce cigarette smoking among the masses, especially among Africans and Asians (2).

Ramadan fasting has spiritual, physical, psychological, and social benefits; however, man-made problems may occur, if fasting is not properly practiced. First of all, there is no need to consume excess food at iftar (the food eaten immediately after sunset to break fast), dinner or sahur ( the light meal generally eaten about half an hour to one hour before dawn). The body has regulatory mechanisms that activate during fasting. There is efficient utilization of body fat, El Ati et al. (3) . Basal metabolism slows down during Ramadan fasting, Husain et al. (4). A diet that is less than a normal amount of food intake but balanced is sufficient enough to keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan.

Health problems can emerge as a result of excess food intake, foods that make the diet unbalanced, and insufficient sleep (5, 6). Ultimately also, such a lifestyle contradicts the essential requirements and spirit of Ramadan.

            DIET DURING RAMADAN

According to Sunna (the practices of Prophet Muhammad, Pbuh) and research findings referred in this report, a dietary plan is given:

            1. Bread/Cereal/Rice, Pasta, Biscuits and Cracker Group: 6-11 servings/day;
            2. Meat/Beans/ Nut Group: 2-3 servings/day.
            3. Milk and Milk Product Group: 2-3 servings/day.
            4. Vegetable Group: 3-5 servings/day;
            5. Fruit Group: 2-4 servings/day.
            6. Added sugar (table sugar, sucrose): sparingly.
            7. Added fat, polyunsaturated oil 4-7 table spoons.

            Breakfast, iftar:
            Dates, three
            Juice, 1 serving (4 oz.)
Vegetable soup with some pasta or graham crackers, 1 cup

The body's immediate need at the time of iftar is to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose for every living cell, particularly the brain and nerve cells. Dates and juices are good sources of sugars. Dates and juice in the above quantity are sufficient to bring low blood glucose levels to normal levels. Juice and soup help maintain water and mineral balance in the body. An unbalanced diet and too many servings of sherbets and sweets with added sugar have been found to be unhealthy, Gumma et al. (7).

            Dinner:
Consume foods from all the following food groups:

Meat/Bean Group: Chicken, beef, lamb, goat, fish, 1-2 servings (serving size = a slice =1 oz); green pea, chickpea (garbanzo, chana, humus), green gram, black gram, lentil, lima bean and other beans, 1 serving (half cup). Meat and beans are a good source of protein, minerals, and certain vitamins. Beans are a good source of dietary fiber, as well.

Bread/Cereal Group: Whole wheat bread, 2 servings (serving size = 1 oz) or cooked rice, one cup or combination. This group is a good source of complex carbohydrates, which are a good source of energy and provide some protein, minerals, and dietary fiber.

Milk Group: milk or butter-milk (lassi without sugar), yogurt or cottage cheese (one cup). Those who can not tolerate whole milk must try fermented products such as butter-milk and yogurt. Milk and dairy products are good sources of protein and calcium, which are essential for body tissue maintenance and several physiological functions.

Vegetable Group: Mixed vegetable salad, 1 serving (one cup), (lettuce, carrot, parsley, cucumber, broccoli, coriander leaves, cauliflower or other vegetables as desired.) Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil or any polyunsaturated oil and 2 spoons of vinegar. Polyunsaturated fat provides the body with essential fatty acids and keto acids. Cooked vegetables such as guar beans, French beans, okra (bhindi), eggplant (baigan), bottle gourd (loki), cabbage, spinach, 1 serving (4 oz). Vegetables are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, carotene, lycopenes, and other phytochemicals, which are antioxidants. These are helpful in the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and many other health problems.

Fruits Group: 1-2 servings of citrus and/or other fruits. Eat fruits as the last item of the dinner or soon after dinner, to facilitate digestion and prevent many gastrointestinal problems. Citrus fruits provide vitamin C. Fruits are a good source of dietary fiber.

Fruits and mixed nuts may be eaten as a snack after dinner or tarawiaha or before sleep.

            Pre-dawn Meal (Sahur):

Consume a light sahur. Eat whole wheat or oat cereal or whole wheat bread, 1-2 serving with a cup of milk. Add 2-3 teaspoons of olive oil or any other monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats in a salad or the cereal. Eat 1-2 servings of fruits, as a last item.

            DISCUSSION

Blood cholesterol and uric acid levels are sometimes elevated during the month of Ramadan (. Contrary to popular thinking, it was found that intake of a moderately high-fat diet, around 36% of the total energy (calories), improved blood cholesterol profile, Nomani, et al. (9) and Nomani (10). It also prevents the elevation of blood uric acid level (8-10). The normal recommended guideline for fat is 30% or less energy. On weight basis, suggested fat intake during Ramadan is almost the same as at normal days. Fat is required for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and carotenoids. Essential fatty acids are an important component of the cell membrane. They also are required for the synthesis of the hormone prostaglandin. Keto-acids from fat are especially beneficial during Ramadan to meet the energy requirement of brain and nerve cells. Keto-acids also are useful in the synthesis of glucose through the metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis. This reduces the breakdown of body proteins for glucose synthesis. Therefore, the energy equivalent of 1-2 bread/cereal servings may be replaced with polyunsaturated fat.

During Ramadan increased gastric acidity is often noticed, Iraki, et al. (5), exhibiting itself with symptoms such as a burning feeling in the stomach, a heaviness in the stomach, and a sour mouth. Whole wheat bread, vegetables, humus, beans, and fruits -- excellent sources of dietary fiber -- trigger muscular action, churning and mixing food, breaking food into small particles, binding bile acids, opening the area between the stomach and the deudenum-jejunum and moving digesta in the small intestine, Kay (11). Thus, dietary fiber helps reduce gastric acidity and excess bile acids, Rydning et al. (12). In view of dietary fiber's role in moving digesta, it prevents constipation. It's strongly suggested that peptic ulcer patients avoid spicy foods and consult a doctor for appropriate medicine and diet. Diabetic subjects, particularly severe type I (insulin dependent) or type II (non-insulin dependent), must consult their doctor for the type and dosage of medicine, and diet and precautions to be taken during the month. Generally diabetes mellitus, type II, is manageable through proper diet during Ramadan, Azizi and Siahkolah (13).

Pregnant and lactating women's needs for energy and nutrients are more critical than the needs of men (14). There is a possibility of health complications to the pregnant woman and the fetus or the lactating mother and the breastfed child, if energy and nutrient requirements are not met during the month of Ramadan (15-19). Governments, communities, and heads of the family must give highest priority to meet women's dietary needs. In African countries, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and many other places malnutrition is a major problem, especially among women from low-income groups. Further more, it is common among these women to perform strenuous work on farms or in factories, and other places. Malnutrition and strenuous conditions may lead to medical problems and danger to life. Under these conditions one must consult a medical doctor for treatment and maulana or shiekh for postponement or other suggestions regarding fasting. Quran Al-Hakeem and Hadith allow pregnant women and lactating mothers flexibility during the month of Ramadan.

For practical purposes and estimation of nutrients a diet was formulated, given below:

            Iftar:
            3 dates, 1/2 cup of orange juice, 1 cup of vegetable soup, 2 plain graham crackers;
            Dinner:
            1 cup of vegetable salad with two teaspoons of corn oil and two teaspoon of vinegar, 2 oz. of chicken, 1/2 cup of okra, 4 oz. of cooked whole chana (garbanzo), 3 tea spoon of oil while cooking main dishes, 2 slices of whole wheat bread, 1 cup of cooked rice, 3/4 cup of plain yogurt, one orange, 1/2 cup grapes, 1 oz of nuts-mixed roasted-without salt;
            Sahur:
2 slices of whole wheat bread, 1 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of vegetable salad with two teaspoons of corn oil and two teaspoons of vinegar, 1 skinned apple, 2 teaspoons of sugar with tea or coffee.

Nutritionist IV (20) was used to estimate energy and nutrient content in the above diet, which was as follows: energy, 2136 kilocalories; protein, 70g; carbohydrate , 286g; fat, 87g, 35 % of energy of the total intake, (saturated fat 16.9g; mono saturated, 28.4g; poly unsaturated, 34g; other 7.3g; - oleic, 25.6g; linoleic, 29.5; linolenic, 0.6g; EPA-Omega-3, 0.006g; DHA-omega-3, 0.023g; dietary fiber 34g; calcium, 1013mg; sodium, 3252 mg; potassium, 2963mg; iron 13.3mg; zinc, 10mg. When the nutrients were compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), for an adult non-pregnant and non-lactating female (14), the diet met 100% or more of the RDA for protein, calcium, sodium, potassium, and vitamin A, K, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folate, and C. The energy was close to the RDA, (97%). The dietary fiber level also was met as per the recommendation (11). Consuming food in the above amount by pregnant or lactating female may not meet the RDA for all of the nutrients. They may need supplementation of some minerals and vitamins such as, iron vitamin D, and more energy through bread or rice.

              Further suggestions:

Drink sufficient water between Iftar and sleep to avoid dehydration.
Consume sufficient vegetables at meal s. Eat fruits at the end of the meal.
Avoid intake of high sugar (table sugar, sucrose) foods through sweets or other forms.
              Avoid spicy foods.
Avoid caffeine drinks such as coke, coffee or tea. Caffeine is a diuretic. Three days to five days before Ramadan gradually reduce the intake of these drinks. A sudden decrease in caffeine prompts headaches, mood swings and irritability.
Smoking is a health risk factor. Avoid smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan. Smoking negatively affects utilization of various vitamins, metabolites and enzyme systems in the body.
Do not forget to brush or Miswak (tender neem tree branch, Azhardicta indica or other appropriate plant in a country, about 1/4-1/2 inch diameter and 6-8 inches length, tip partially chewed and made brush like). Brush your teeth before sleep and after sahur. Brush more than two times or as many times as practical.

Normal or overweight people should not gain weight. For overweight people Ramadan is an excellent opportunity to lose weight. Underweight or marginally normal weight people are discouraged from losing weight. Analyzing a diet's energy and nutritional component, using food composition tables or computer software, will be useful in planning an appropriate diet.

It is recommended that everyone engage in some kind of light exercise, such as stretching or walking. It's important to follow good time management practices for Ibada (prayer and other religious activities), sleep, studies, job, and physical activities or exercise.

In summary, intake of a balanced diet is critical to maintain good health, sustain an active lifestyle and attain the full benefits of Ramadan.
