Report: NASCAR to switch to unleaded fuel in 2008

NEW YORK.NASCAR will begin using unleaded fuel in its cars and trucks beginning in 2008, The New York Times reported Friday.

The racing series has used high-octane leaded fuel for decades, but has been testing a new fuel for a few months, the newspaper said. NASCAR has been searching for an alternative for years, even though it is exempt from the 1970 Clean Air Act which required all automobiles to use unleaded fuel.

Still, NASCAR was criticized by advocacy groups for its continued use of leaded fuel.

Gary Nelson, NASCAR's vice president for research and development, told the Times that the fuel, Sunoco 260 GTX, will be used in Nextel Cup, Busch and Craftsman Truck events. Nelson also said it is already being used in the Grand American road racing series.

Sunoco came up with a formula that really seems to do the job,'' Nelson said. It does a very good job inside the engine.''

The move followed an appeal by the advocacy group Clean Air Watch to the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday to begin testing the air quality for lead at NASCAR events,'' the Times reported.

It sounds like it's a step to bring NASCAR into the 21st century with stopping use of an old-century fuel,'' said Frank O'Donnell, executive director of Clean Air Watch.

      Fiat Panda Cross

Bulging Fiat incorporates to its range 4x4 a new version with preparation ' off road' that denominates Cross, that offers a sport air and more rustic benefits. Everything a compact one of reduced dimensions with traction to the four wheels that can give much game by lands of difficult adhesion and in little accessible places for the most voluminous SUV.

Honda launches with two new cars!

The Honda Racing F1 team unveiled its challenger for the 2006 F1 season in Spain this morning with the new driver line-up of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

As an indication of Honda's commitment to the new challenge and the strength of its manufacturing operation, the team delivered not one, but two identical RA106 race cars to the launch to enable Barrichello and Button to start testing at exactly the same time.

It is the first F1 car launched by a Honda works team since 1968.

The 2006 F1 season means a great deal to all of us at Honda as it marks the beginning of a new adventure and confirms an even greater commitment to F1," said president of Honda Racing Development, Yasuhiro Wada.

"The launch today of the first F1 chassis since 1968 to carry the Honda name is a particularly significant moment. It is up to all the engineers involved in the programme, at the F1 Operations Centre in Brackley, HRD in Bracknell and Honda R&D in Japan to rise to the challenge of F1 and show the world what Honda can do as a fully integrated force. The development of a new challenging spirit and a desire to work together to challenge for wins is at the core of Honda's philosophy. Honda has always exposed its engineers to the highest competition in racing as it uniquely prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead. We are all excited about the season to come and up for the fight!"

The new cars and their RA806E engines are the product, according to the outfit, of 'a single, unified team' which combines the resources of the Honda Racing F1 team operations centre in Brackley, Honda Racing Development's engine base in Bracknell and Honda R&D in Tochigi, Japan.

The RA106 sported its new base canvas of Honda Racing White, a colour which has been synonymous with the Honda motorsport identity since the company's F1 debut in 1964. The rest of the livery has the more familiar feel of the Lucky Strike brand, which remains as title sponsor for the 2006 season.

It was just two weeks ago that 2005 Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart took a serious tumble in his sprint car during the Chili Bowl at Tulsa, Okla., suffering multiple injuries.

"When it first happened, my arm and ribs bothered me a lot," Stewart said. "But by the time we got to the hospital, the ribs were hurting more than the arm."

Stewart says doctors gave him no definitive diagnosis, telling him that there is an apparent fracture that was not easily visible to them via x-ray. Despite bruising and some soreness in the ribs under his left arm, Stewart pronounced himself fit to drive in this weekend's Rolex 24 at Daytona.

"My arm is 100 percent," Stewart said. "It's the ribs now and there's really nothing you can do about that except rest it. ... I'm sure it'll be a painful weekend this weekend, but the good thing about adrenaline is that it will mask a lot of that.

In its boldest product offensive ever, Toyota will put five all new or substantially redesigned vehicles on sale this year, with four coming out in the next few months.

They include the best-selling Camry sedan, two sport-utilities, a small car named Yaris and the much-anticipated revision of the Tundra full-size pickup.
But the Japanese automaker, known for its steady growth and conservative styling, has some surprises in store for its buyers. Those include a hybrid version of the Camry that gets 43 mpg in city driving and a new FJ Cruiser SUV that's heavy on personality. The efforts should please those in Silicon Valley, where Toyota is the most popular car brand, routinely doubling its national market share.
``I think it's a big year in a way that's not just about volume,'' said Jim Lentz, the Toyota division's group vice president and general manager. ``This is the beginning of a total rejuvenation of our product lineup.''
The automaker sold nearly 2 million cars and trucks in the United States in 2005 through its Toyota and Scion brands, another record-breaking performance. Overall, its sales were up 10.8 percent, and its cars, trucks, hybrids and Scion brand all reached new milestones.

What We Can't Wait To Drive In 2006

The doorman at the Mandarin Oriental hotel on New York's Columbus Circle is a car nut.

He overheard us having a recent conversation about a customer's Maybach 62 from DaimlerChrysler, which was parked outside the hotel, and joined in to talk about the $385,000 sedan. As it turned out, he had an extensive knowledge of cars and could readily quote engine specifications and horsepower figures. His own vehicle, a silver, 340-hp, Hemi-powered Dodge Charger R/T sedan, was parked across the street and shined to perfection.

The conversation turned to Bugatti's new, $1.2 million Veyron 16.4 supercar, which recently went into production and is headed for the U.S. The 16-cylinder sports car has 1001 horsepower.

"I don't understand these guys who buy these cars and put 100 miles a year on them," he said. "If I buy that car, I'm going to drive it every day, and I'm going to use all one thousand and one horsepower."

Call us weak, but we would be more willing to settle than that guy was. Bugatti, if you let us drive the Veyron, we'll be happy with 900 of its horses. Maybe even 800. Really, we're simple folks at heart. OK, let us rev it to 850 horsepower at the least, and we promise not to do any burnouts or trick spins as we're cackling our way around the racetrack.

                              Cars pass Las Vegas test

Because it is held at a non-restrictor-plate track, the Nextel Cup test session at Las Vegas is often referred to as the first “real” test of the season.
This year’s three-day Las Vegas session, which concluded Wednesday afternoon, could probably be referred to as the first “real important” test of the season.
The addition of the extra adjective is because major changes have been made to two of the three makes of car used in the Cup series.
And while brand No. 3 has not, as of now, changed badges or major parts from a year ago, it, too, is facing crucial questions about its viability on the track.
Ford, this year, is introducing the Fusion to replace the Taurus brand.
The Fusion is significantly different from its predecessor.
Kevin Kennedy, the public-affairs manager for Ford Racing Technology, said just about every area where change is allowed by NASCAR rules has been changed.
Kennedy said balance is targeted in the new Fusion.
Early reports out of Las Vegas indicate the target may have been hit.
“The balance seems really good on it, and I’m real happy with it so far,” driver Greg Biffle said after Tuesday’s round of tests.”
After the final day of testing, a Fusion had the fastest lap, that by Carl Edwards.
The Fords, once again, will be powered by the Yates-Roush engines that had Taurus drivers frothing in joy a year ago.
The Monte Carlo badge will once again be affixed to the Chevrolets in the Cup series, but this season’s version of the car will be very different from last year’s.
A new nose and tail will draw the most attention on the 2006 Monte Carlo. But, Chevy driver Jimmie Johnson said, a lot more has changed than just those two things.
“We actually have as many changes to our car as Ford has for theirs,” Johnson said. “We just don’t have a new name on it. All 13 templates (which differentiate the different makes of cars) that sit on the car have been adjusted some this year.”
The Monte Carlo of Tony Stewart won the Cup championship last year. That prompts the question, why change?
The answer, according to General Motors Racing director Mark Kent, is because the 2005 version had some weaknesses.
“What we wanted to do is continue our dominance on super speedways,” Kent said. “We had to develop a body that did not compromise that, but also gave the teams the opportunity to add down force as required to help our performance on some of the shorter tracks like the mile-and-one-half tracks that we go to.”
So far, so good in meeting that goal. At the 1.5-mile Vegas track, the Chevy of Jeff Green had the second-fastest lap of the week.
There has been talk that GM would like NASCAR to give it permission

UPDATE 2-Ford ups Focus car cash, Chrysler offers cheap loan

DETROIT- Ford Motor Co.on Thursday added a $500 cash rebate on its Focus sedan, while DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group offered interest-free financing on most of its vehicles.

Chrysler is offering customers zero-percent loans for a period of five years, Chrysler spokesman Kevin McCormick said.

Chrysler's (DCXGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) (DCX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) U.S. sales rose 5 percent last month after a two-month decline. However, its truck sales were flat.

Ford broke its four-month losing streak, posting a 2.7 percent increase in January U.S. sales, primarily due to higher fleet sales.

Ford spokeswoman Whitney Drake said the automaker raised incentives on the Focus sedan to remain competitive.

The total cash rebate on the 2006 model-year Focus is now $2,500.

Sales of Focus sedans were nearly flat in January. Overall, Ford's car sales increased 18 percent, boosted by its new mid-size sedans -- the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr -- and the large Five Hundred car.

Ford has said it is trying to move away from aggressive incentives, preferring to lower the sticker prices of vehicles to reflect actual buyer transaction prices.

Even so, Ford spent an average of $2,839 per vehicle on incentives in January, higher than the industry average of $2,391 per vehicle, according to industry tracking firm Autodata. Ford's incentive spending was down, however, from $3,075 the previous month.

Chrysler led the industry last month in incentives, spending at $3,317 per vehicle. Its spending on discounts was slightly lower from $3,354 in December, according to Autodata.
