NASCAR drivers ultra competitive on eve of bobsled race

LAKE PLACID, N.Y- As soon as John Morgan opened the drivers' meeting inside the Winter Olympic Museum, Dick Trickle voiced a concern.

"Some pushers are way better than others," Trickle, a former NASCAR driver, said Thursday night on the eve of the Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge.

"Yeah, they're already thinking about cheating," Morgan replied, a big smile on his face. "We'll get every driver to sign an affidavit they won't bribe the pusher."

Welcome to NASCAR on ice. Trickle is one of 10 current or former drivers who are taking part in this unique event, an effort to raise funds to keep the U.S. men's and women's bobsled teams at the forefront of international racing.

And even at age 64 and retired, Trickle doesn't like to lose.

"You try to run the best line," Trickle said not long after he and his son Chad had completed three runs down the 6-year-old bobsled track at nearby Mount Van Hoevenberg. "I had about the fifth-fastest time, but I think a couple of guys got sleds that are house sleds. They've got their own name on them, that kind of stuff."

New Car Overview Of The 2006 BMW X3 Near-Luxury Compact

New Car Overview Of The 2006 BMW X3 Near-Luxury Compact Sport Utility Vehicle
Description: Near-Luxury Compact Sport Utility Vehicle
                Base MSRP Range: $36,800
                Invoice Price Range: $33,670
                Where built: Austria

This compact-class SUV goes by the alphanumeric tag of X3. Think of it as a raucous sports car with a wagon's boxy utility bay. A forceful in-line six-cylinder engine fits in front of the four-door passenger compartment that comprises two rows of seats for five riders and the cargo bay accessible through a roof-hinged tailgate.

X3 stocks the xDrive electronically controlled AWD mechanism. Off pavement, X3 adds another device called Hill Descent Control (HDC) to keep all wheels firmly planted on a steep slope. For power, BMW puts a 3.0-liter engine in X3 3.0i with 225 hp through a sporty ZF six-speed manual or five-speed Steptronic automatic shifter. X3's cabin is impressive in design and content with standard features in 2006 including an onboard computer.

Packages load additional gear, such as the premium package with Panoramic Roof or sport package with body color on side s***ts and bumpers.

France's Luc Alphand wins Dakar Rally, final stage not timed

DAKAR, Senegal- French driver Luc Alphand won the Dakar Rally on Sunday after finishing the final non-timed leg of the race in Senegal.

Alphand led heading into the final stage, which race organizers said would not be timed to honor two boys killed during the race.

Alphand, a former ski champion, was clocked at 53 hours, 47 minutes, 32 seconds at the end of Saturday's penultimate stage. He was 17:53 ahead of Giniel de Villiers of South Africa and 1:50:38 ahead of Nani Roma of Spain.

"Being here is fabulous, it's like a dream," Alphand said after slowly crossing the finish line. "I never imagined since I did my first Dakar in 1998 that it would be possible to win one day, and finally I did it."

Marc Coma of Spain won the motorbike race. On Saturday, he led overall at 55:27:17, a margin of 1:13:29 over Cyril Despres of France.

The punishing two-week rally finished with a 19-mile stage along West Africa's Atlantic Ocean beaches to Lac Rose, a pink lake east of Dakar that takes its unique color from a type of algae.

Three deaths occurred during the race. In Senegal on Saturday, a boy was killed when he was hit by a support truck. In Guinea on Friday, a boy was killed by a car as he crossed the track.

Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott died on Jan. 9 in a fatal crash during the ninth stage in Mauritania, becoming the 23rd competitor to die in the rally's 28 years.

The 5,619-mile race began New Year's Eve in Lisbon, Portugal, and took competitors through Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Senegal.

                                Kia Sportage

Kia Motors Iberia initiates the commercialization of its Sportage model that now incorporates like newness more powerful a diesel engine and a manual gear box of six speeds. With 140 horsepowers, the new variant is based on previous the four cylinders of two liters of 112 horses, but it modifies thanks to the assembly of a turbocompressor of variable geometry and a specific electronic management; these changes allow a gain of power of a 25%. In addition, the motor pair is increased of a similar form, happening of 245.2 Nm. to 305 Nm. but to the same regime of revolutions, that is to say, stays constant between 1,800 and 2,500 RPM.

This increase of power is not translated in a greater cost because this new version has an identical fuel consumption to the one of the Sportage CRDi that until now was sold; the weighted average in the version of two driving wheels is of 7 liters each one hundred kilometers. Yes there is an increase of benefits, with faster accelerations, a terminal velocity of 178 kilometers per hour and one better capacity of recovery from low power settings. The price of the new Sportage 2,0 CRDi in version of two driving wheels and finished LX is of 23,990 euros and the version 4 xs 4 with the EX- most complete equipment is of 27,190. The rest of range stays with the gasoline versions of four and six cylinders.
