Alonso to dominate F1 at McLaren: Webber

Australian driver Mark Webber has tipped Fernando Alonso to again dominate Formula One next year despite switching from world champion team Renault to McLaren.

The Spaniard recently clinched his second straight world title and Webber believes he will be hard to beat again in 2007.

He says the title is likely to be a showdown between Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, the Finn who left McLaren to replace Michael Schumacher at Ferrari next season.

"If Alonso can get a good car from McLaren I don't think anyone will touch him again - he's the class in the field at the moment, there's no-one who can compete with him consistently," Webber said.

"He's double world champion when Michael was still around which is a great feather in his cap and something which I know he's particularly rapt about.

"I think he will give them that lift actually. McLaren have been looking for a bit of direction for a while now and I think Fernando can give it to them," he said.

"Kimi is phenomenally quick, we know that. Whether he can take it to Fernando during the course of the season, it's going to be a good fight between those two."

Without Schumacher's drive, Ferrari could fall off the pace but Webber expects Renault to again be challenging for the championship with Giancarlo Fisichella and rookie Heikki Kovalainen.

"Renault will be strong, Kovalainen will be one of the finds of the season I think and Fisi could come out of his shell because he hasn't got Fernando there," he said.

Webber has completed a disastrous two-year spell with former F1 heavyweight team Williams but believes the British outfit will lift its performance next season.

"They'll have a lot better year next year - they have to because it just couldn't be any worse than this year," he said.

"Whether it's as good as they want it to be remains to be seen."

Webber said that midway through 2006 he found it difficult to motivate himself with the cars subject to continual mechanical failures.

"It's never ever happened in my career before but it was tough towards the end because you felt there was not a great deal you could do to make a difference and that was hard."

But he is optimistic of a revival with his new team Red Bull, driving alongside veteran Scot David Coulthard and says the Renault-powered cars could spring some surprises after running mid-field for the past couple of years.

"There's a lot of pressure inside the team, they want to go and achieve things," Webber said.

"They want to make a difference next year, otherwise I wouldn't have gone there.

"Is it world-beating? Over time, it could be but I'm absolutely praying that they're going to be one of the finds of the season next year."

Meanwhile, Webber will be joined by several other high-profile athletes in Tasmania this Sunday for the start of the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge, which raises funds for the Cancer Council of Tasmania's Cancer Plus program and TLC for Kids.

Webber's team for the six-day cycling, kayaking and trekking race around the Tasmanian wilderness will include British dual Olympic gold medallist rower James Cracknell, Australian ironman Guy Andrews, and Tasmanian adventure racer Matt Dalziel.

This year's challenge will feature 12 teams competing against each other in timed stages over the six days from November 5-10.
