The realpolitik of this part of the world is that the US and Britain badly need Iran's cooperation. They need it to get out of Iraq, and somehow to police the collapse and partition of that benighted country. They have no need of new enemies. So when Ahmadinejad, at whoever's instigation, writes a letter inviting talks, it is a good idea to reply. If it is bluff, it is bluff worth calling. The present shouting match is megaphone appeasement, as would be a bomb attack on Iran's factories. The hawkish route to disarmament and regime change - if such is the goal - can only be through constructive engagement.

There is, of course, one thing that Britain and America could do that would wholly disorientate Ahmadinejad and have him rushing troops to his borders. It would be a sudden end to the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Such a decision would remove at a stroke the running theme of Iranian militancy. It would saddle Tehran with two unstable neighbours whose insurgents and revanchists would cause it, its allies and its surrogates no end of trouble. After a bit of initial crowing the next Iraq will be Ahmadinejad's nightmare. Unfortunately such a step seems too clever by half for the west's present leadership.

Bush: Iran Letter Doesn't Answer Question

President Bush says a lengthy letter from Iran's leader doesn't answer the question the world is asking, which is: "When will you get rid of your nuclear program?"

The president made his first public comment on the letter from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a session with reporters from several Florida newspapers in Orlando.

The president tells reporters that the U.S. and other nations are in agreement that Iran shouldn't have a nuclear weapon or the capacity to make one. But he says the letter didn't address that question.

Yesterday, the president said he's confident diplomacy will work with Iran, although the U.N. Security Council hasn't reached agreement yet on a measure to deal with Iran's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday that a new proposal that European diplomats will soon present to Iran makes plain the international cost of going forward with disputed nuclear development.

Rice acknowledged that any attempt to punish or coerce Iran through the United Nations Security Council is on hold while Britain, France and Germany renew diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to back down.

"Iran knows that there are two options that have been there all along. They can have a civilian nuclear program that is appropriate and that the international community can support, or they can face isolation," Rice told reporters in Washington.

The letter by President Ahmadinejad to President Bush generated a lot of speculations both inside Iran and in the outside world. It was the first time that a leader of the Islamic Republic had directly written to the leader of the “Great Satan”, and used polite terminologies in addressing them. At home, the reformists welcomed it as a breakthrough in the long-standing estrangement between the two governments, while the conservative press hailed it as a grand gesture on par with letters sent out some fourteen centuries ago by the Prophet Mohammad to leaders of the then empires inviting them to the bosoms of Islam. The latter group knew more about the Islamic President than the formers, and their judgements must be nearer to the truth. Ahmadinejad seems to be on a Messianic mission to save the world.

The Islamic Republic President appeals to the religious sentiments of President Bush, and in religious texts finds a common language to talk to him. He reminds him of the follies of the Americans past and present and puts America in the duck for many of the ills of the world. He advises him that “democracy and liberalism” have failed the humankind and invites him to join “people of the world” by submitting to the truth. He is there to offer him salvation. At the same time, he warns him of the consequences for people who do not follow the right path. He ends his 18-page letter by the words “will of God will prevail over all things” in order to remind the leader of the most powerful nation in the world that some other forces are in action and that he better watch himself lest he finds himself in the wrong camp.

That the letter has been dismissed by its addressee is not of much concern to its writer. It is said that when messengers delivered the Prophet Mohammad’s letter to the leader of the Persian Empire it was dealt with contempt. Soon afterwards, the Empire was trembling under the feet of Moslem soldiers, and then it was history. It appears that Mr. Ahmadinejad is on a similar mission. His meteoric rise to power and unparalleled fame on the world stage has given him a sense of importance and relevance not enjoyed by any his predecessors. And his belief in the imminent appearance of the Shi’ah’s Hidden Imam has given him a sense of urgency to pursue his noble aims with speed and not to be afraid of infidel powers on earth. For him, the Islamic Republic of Iran is the manifestation of divine power on earth and he has the mission to make it the pivotal centre of the Islamic world and the vanguard of the battle of truth against untruth.

The confident tone present throughout the letter, and which is a characteristic of Ahmadinejad’s public utterings too, belies the absurdity of his mission and the paradigms of his references. He apparently believes in what he is saying, and says them with total conviction. Even those who do not understand Persian may be able to detect his tone of confidence in delivering his speeches. In diplomatic circles too, he has no qualms in expressing his thoughts bluntly and forcefully, and he seems to enjoy fully doing it too!

Or at least that’s what appears to be on the surface. Indeed, while the letter is addressed to President Bush, its real audience may be the disadvantaged and disillusioned Moslems around the world. Mr. Ahmadinejad is trying to cast himself amongst Moslems as the latter-day Saladin and ready to take on the leaders of the world infidels by their horns. At the time that the standing of America and Israel are at their lowest amongst the disillusioned Moslems, it is very convenient for him to be overtly anti-American and anti-Israel. And the more confident and bold he is in his utterings and rebuffs of the West, the more he will score in that huge constituency. The letter may indeed be yet another means in his disposal to prove his credentials for leading the Moslem world in its historic battle against the western “crusaders”. And the evidences suggest that he may be winning in this strategy.

In Iran, he has managed to turn the question of nuclear energy into a national issue and raise the national pride in its defence. Today many Iranians have bought his thesis that the West is against Iran acquiring nuclear technology know-how for civilian use. In order to do that, he has portrayed himself as a born-again nationalist following the footsteps of Mossaddegh the hero of the oil nationalisation movement in 1950’s. Similarly, he has put on the mantle of anti-Americanism and anti-Israelism for the benefit of the Moslem world. Contrary to the common perception, the latter strategy does not have much appeal inside Iran. But it does have a powerful echo in the post 9/11 Moslem societies, and in the eyes of many may turn Ahmadinejad into an Islamic hero. And so, Ahmadinejad is trying to model himself after Mossaddegh on the national level and after Saladin on the regional and international level.

In perusing this strategy, while following his nuclear ambitions, Ahmadinejad is not much afraid of their repercussions in terms of military attacks by Americans and/or the Israelis. Indeed, he may be trying to provoke them into it. He is calculating that there is no appetite for a full-scale invasion of Iran a la Afghanistan and Iraq (that is unfeasible and would spell a catastrophe far bigger than what happened in Iraq). And as far as he is concerned, any form of attack will strengthen the Islamic Republic, leave him and his masters in power, and it may also raise his status in the Islamic world (though the reaction of the Iranians may be quite different). In such a scenario he thinks that he will have the opportunity to take revenge against the Americans and other western powers involved in the attack using the Islamic Republic’s many agents around the world. In that regard, he sees himself and the Islamic Republic as the eventual winner.

And so as the international crisis over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program worsens, Mr. Ahmadinejad is continuing with his grand gestures of defiance and brinkmanship to the very limit. And he finds eager listeners for what he is saying across the Moslem world – from university students in Jakarta to hezbollah fighters in Lebanon. It is only a matter of time before the crisis gets out of hand and a full confrontation between Iran and the West/Israel follows. The only thing that may realistically prevent that happening is a change in the Iranian leadership/regime, initiated by Iranians themselves, that sees Ahmadinejad out of power and a more sensible and transparent foreign policy in place. At the same time it should be said that any military attack against Iran not only will have disastrous effects on the population, but it would also strengthen the Islamic Republic regime (at least in the short term), weaken the democratic opposition, and unleash a new wave of terrorism around the world.

                    Answering Ahmadinejad

                    May 13, 2006

                    Dear President Ahmadinejad,

Sir, you recently sent an 18-page letter to your American counterpart, the first such missive the U.S. government has received from your country since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Your government spokesmen said it suggested "new solutions" to the nuclear crisis that your continued enrichment of uranium has provoked.

While it is a godsend for those who desperately seek out long, rambling dissertations on history, religion, philosophy and bizarre Sept. 11 conspiracy theories, new solutions are hard to find in it. Perhaps we missed a page.

Some people do suggest that it is an opening of sorts, an opportunity to start a conversation. So, since it is unlikely that you will receive an official reply from the U.S. government, please allow us to respond.

At the beginning of your letter, you ask President Bush, "can one be a follower of Jesus Christ ... but at the same time, have countries attacked; the lives, reputations and possessions of people destroyed. ... My basic question is this: Is there no better way to interact with the rest of the world?"

Good question, though your threat to wipe Israel off the map, to "annihilate" it in a "single storm," doesn't suggest a better model. That sounds more like the announcement of a target for the nuclear weapons you say you don't want to build.

About your nuclear ambitions. You ask, "in what other point in history has scientific and technical progress been a crime?"

You miss the point. Please read the latest International Atomic Energy Agency report on your country's decades of lies and obfuscation over your nuclear program. Read any of the last several reports, dating back a few years, which provide chapter and verse on a secret program that cannot be, as you claim, just for peaceful nuclear power. Your boasts of uranium enrichment, your hints of a secret program that would speed Iran's ability to build nukes, your country's stonewalling of international inspectors and your brushing aside of European and Russian proposals to defuse the crisis and allow you to have the nuclear power you profess to want leads to only one conclusion. You want nuclear weapons.

You wrote that "liberalism and Western style democracy have not been able to help realize the ideals of humanity. Today these two concepts have failed. Those with insight can already hear the sounds of the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the liberal democratic systems."

You seem to be channeling Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev. You do seem to adhere to a famous quote attributed to Josef Stalin: "Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." The mullahs who lead your country have ruthlessly suppressed human rights, freedom and democracy. Most reform candidates were swept off the ballot in 2004 elections. The rest of the world is not fooled.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian reformer, recently visited the Tribune. She reported that your regime continues with a vengeance to repress women, imprison political foes, silence the press and intimidate all who attempt to speak out. The young, who dominate the population, are overwhelmingly in favor of reform, but have grown fearful and apathetic. "The number who want reform has not decreased," Ebadi says. "It is getting larger day by day. People are unsatisfied with the situation, with unemployment, and inflation and high prices and lack of freedom."

In their discontent, President Ahmadinejad, you hear not some fanciful demise of democracy, but quite possibly the demise of ... you.

                    Write again soon.

                    • It is really quite ironic to finally see an American admit to "Thinking Outside the Iran Box" (Jim Hoagland in the Washington Post). Blimey, for how long have all of us, who live outside US, have said about the US's two-faced policies with the mullahs. All the US Treasury Department has to do, is to act on the info it has, and bingo the mullahs are out. A list of all the companies that do business with the US and Iran is readily available. All the US Treasury needs to do is to give a warning to those companies about doing business with the Islamists in Iran.

                      Back to the future
But let's just go back to the moment when the Shahanshah left Iran. He was deemed to be a threat to the world, because he was developing his military too quickly to the future. At that time Israel and the Arabs thought just like now, that the nuclear technology will get out of hand. Suddenly the world media lost all memory of Iran program to jump into the future. Now here was a country that had decided to get out of the medieval times.

                      Mad in Iran
So look beyond the Shahs, Mullahs or Whoever. The fact is that this is the 21st Century version of conquering a country. Keep the people of the country bemused by silly political showmanship. One day it is Shah and Carter, then it is Bush and Ahmadinejad. What does it matter? Keep the people in Iran mad. Get them all caught up with some dogma that will keep them isolated, but more importantly, such that they are seen as mad. The last thing that the US wants is for Iran to return to "good old times of the Shah". Can you imagine what would happen to the property market in LA for a start? No, the US was made by brain draining the world, and all Iranian brains are destined to go to the US.

                      Made in Iran
The counter voice inside me say, "But the point is that Iran is a power house. It has the magnificent mix of young people, lots of natural resources, and the best real estate on Earth. If you are no good at geography, just take a look at the planet, and you will see that Iran is at the cross roads of civilization." Cool, ok, good argument, but the last thing that the major companies in the world want is a whole bunch of goods Made in Iran, which are better and cheaper than Made in Japan, Made in China, Made in USA, or Made in EU. So they will support a government in Iran, that does not allow bright young minds to grow and prosper in Iran. If you are an American, look at eBay, from which heart do you that idea came from? So the US government will just make sure that Iran has a government that does not allow prosperity for its people.

                      Red Alert vs Can Do
But that's not all the world's major powers want. They have invested so much in their military that they just cannot suddenly tear it all down. So a Mickey Mouse that rants regularly is very handy. And that is why we have such a buffoon in charge in Iran. All the world wants from Iran are cheap raw materials, and some reason for the superpowers to keep their military on red alert. The last thing they want is another economically advanced nation that has its own multinational companies with superior quality goods made in Iran, with the "can do" attitude of Good Thoughts Good Words and Good Deeds.

This belief in this Allah will not stop until the entire world bows to its will.

Will America follow Persia ? In many ways, America resembles the great, ancient Persian Empire . Like the ancient Persian Empire once was, the United States is now the greatest government in the world. Like the Persians who were the first world managers and the most tolerant empire-builders, America , with its rich constitution, is also the most tolerant and benevolent nation in the world.

Ancient Persian kings released the Jews from Babylonian captivity, financed the reestablishment of their nation, and restored their national religion. (Zionists, they were!) The United States has basically done the same. The United States is the reincarnation of Persia , an extension of the Achaemenid Empire.

Tyrannical Islam eviscerated the spiritual life of tolerant old Persia . Is history going to repeat itself? It has taken decades for the Persians (modern Iranians) to recover their spirit. Zoroastrianism, the original Iranian religion, was not an effective barrier against the radical religion from the Arabian Desert .

Is Christianity going to withstand Islam on its second rush of world conquest?

The United States as it stands for democracy is the last haven of hope for which humanity can flourish. Today, after 1,400 years, Islam is again the greatest threat to the existence of the free world and the civilization of Christianity. Persians underestimated the destructive power of Islam; let us hope and pray that the United States does NOT underestimate the destructive power of Islam the second time.
