David Beckham was belittled by Real Madrid's president Tuesday as a Hollywood movie-star hopeful spurned by most of the world's top soccer teams.

Team president Ramon Calderon, in comments expected to further sour relations between Beckham and the Spanish club, said the English midfielder joined the Los Angeles Galaxy because there were no other takers.

"The proof that our technical staff was correct not to retain him has been borne out by every other technical staff in the world not wanting him even though he was out of contract," Calderon said in speech to university students that was broadcast by Cadena COPE radio station on Tuesday.

He added: "David Beckham is going to be some sort of film actor living in Hollywood."

Beckham spokesman Simon Oliveira said he would not respond to the comments.

During his university visit, Calderon also criticized Madrid's players, who he said displayed "egotism and vanity."

"They all think they are superstars," he added.

Calderon later released a statement apologizing for his remarks.

"The first thing is to say I'm sorry, a thousand times sorry, to everyone to whom I have offended. Everything I have done at this club since I arrived at Real Madrid has been for the good of the club and my affection and my defense of the players will always be above anything else," he said on the team's Web site.

"During the questions, it is true, I made a series of remarks which could have caused annoyance," he added.

In a statement on its Web site earlier Tuesday, Madrid criticized Cadena COPE for making Calderon's comments public.

"Real Madrid wishes to express its surprise and indignation because a journalist from La COPE ... has violated the intimacy of a private function which attempted to be academic in its content and nature, and has turned it into an act of disloyalty and disrespect toward the university, the students present and the good faith of the president," the team said.

Beckham announced last Thursday he would join the Galaxy in a five-year deal, reportedly worth US$250 million (?193 million), starting in August.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello responded two days later by saying Beckham would no longer play for the team now that he has committed to another club, and would only be able to train with his teammates. That has left Beckham with the prospect of no competitive soccer for six months.

Oliveira said Monday that Beckham hopes to see out the remaining 5 1/2 months of his contract.

Spanish media have suggested that Madrid may try to rescind his contract, although Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas said the club will wait until August.

Beckham, who trained with the team and then attended a players' lunch at a restaurant in Madrid on Tuesday, hasn't won a major trophy since joining the club from Manchester United in 2003.

Former England captain David Beckham must complete the remaining six months of his contract at Real Madrid, club sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said on Monday.

Media reports have suggested Beckham might seek an early release to join his new club Los Angeles Galaxy after coach Fabio Capello said he would not play for Real again.

"Beckham still has six months of his contract left and he has to complete them. Beyond that it is up to the coach (whether he plays or not)," Mijatovic told Real Madrid television.

Mijatovic also said Brazilian striker Ronaldo would not be allowed to leave Real on a free transfer.

"We have some offers for him and we'll see what happens before the end of this January transfer window," he said.

"But let me make one thing clear. There has been a lot of talk recently that we would release him from his contract for nothing. We cannot allow him to go for free."

Ronaldo, 30, has a contract until 2008 but has started only three league games this season.

Although Capello has hinted at a softening of his stance toward Beckham, Mijatovic made it clear the move to play the younger players in recent games meant that it was unlikely that the midfielder would get a look in.

The club have preferred Fernando Gago, Gonzalo Higuain, Miguel Torres and Jose Antonio Reyes to more recognized names over the last two weeks.

"We have a lot of players who promise much and have a great future. I think these youngsters have the edge over ones who have been here a few years because they are the future of the club," Mijatovic added.

Beckham has only started five league games under Capello this season.

He has agreed a five-year contract with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy which will earn him around $250 million.

David Beckham will play against his former club Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time since he left them in 2003 in a gala European match next month.

Beckham, who scored on his unexpected comeback for Real Madrid last Saturday, has been confirmed as a member of a European All-Star XI which will play United in a jubilee match being staged to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European Common Market, the forerunner of the European Union, and United's 50 years of European competition.

Beckham said: "I'm happy to know I'm going to play on March 13th. It will be something special to go back to Old Trafford and I'm really looking forward to it."

The former England captain, 31, played almost 400 games for United before leaving to join Madrid nearly four years ago. Since leaving Manchester United, he has played at Old Trafford for England, but never against United.

Beckham, whose stay at the Bernabeu Stadium will end in the summer when he moves to Major Soccer League club LA Galaxy in America, will be a huge draw for the game.

The European side will be managed by Italian World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi, who is expected to include several members of his squad which lifted the trophy in Germany last summer.

Beckham is also guaranteed to have at least two former England team-mates alongside him with the Liverpool pair of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher confirmed in the European line-up.

United manager Alex Ferguson has promised to play a full-strength side in the match.

If David Beckham can score on his surprise return to Real Madrid's lineup, why not a recall for England?

His move to the Los Angeles Galaxy is months away, and England is in trouble in qualifying for the 2008 European Championship.

England coach Steve McClaren still hasn't worked out his best midfield and there's every chance the English (2-1-1), who already trail Croatia (3-0-1) and Russia (2-0-2), will slip behind Israel (2-1-1) and Macedonia (2-2-1) after qualifying resumes on March 24. Only two teams advance from each group.

Judging by England's performance in last week's 1-0 loss to visiting Spain in an exhibition game, McClaren has big problems. So why not swallow his pride and recall the free kick specialist who has played 94 times for England -- 57 as captain?

The problem for Beckham is that McClaren is not the sort of coach who can admit he was wrong. The England coach also believes he has plenty of reasons not to bring him back.

Despite his free kick equalizer in Saturday's 2-1 win over Real Sociedad, Beckham had been out of the loop for six games -- since about the time he announced his five-year deal with the Galaxy, a deal said to be worth about $50 million.

A move to Los Angeles puts Beckham 5,500 miles out of McClaren's range and effectively with little chance of playing again for England.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello said he wouldn't select the English midfielder, partly because of his form and partly because of the distractions of his big money move to Major League Soccer. Eventually he relented and Beckham rewarded him with a comeback goal.

How England could do with a free kick goal against Israel.

Beckham's last England goal was at the World Cup in the second round against Ecuador, when he curled a free kick over the wall and inside the near post for the only goal of the game.

Six days later, however, his England career seemingly came to an end.

Nursing ankle and Achilles' tendon injuries, he was taken out in the second half and sat tearfully watching his teammates lose a penalty-kick shootout to Portugal in the World Cup quarterfinals. That was July 1 and McClaren, who took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson after the World Cup, immediately made it clear that the Real Madrid star was not part of his England plans.

McClaren didn't see Beckham fitting in with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves and Joe Cole in the England midfield and preferred natural wingers who dribble past defenders, which Beckham doesn't do.

Hargreaves and Cole have been sidelined for several months, and McClaren still won't pick Beckham.

The England coach says he has not "shut the door" on the former captain, but refuses to say whether he has widened it a little.

Even with the problems currently surrounding the England team, McClaren would be unhappy by Beckham's lack of game time for Madrid and alarmed at the media melee that a recall to the national lineup inevitably would create.

McClaren has also been at pains to create his own team rather than the one handed down by Eriksson, who regarded Beckham as his trusted captain.

Capello now says that Beckham is well integrated to the Madrid lineup and he is happy with him. But Beckham would have to virtually play every game for the Spanish club between now and March 24 and score or create several more goals if he were to stand any chance to get back in the England lineup for the Euro 2008 qualifying games against Israel and Andorra.

Even if he did play all those game and score those goals, that still might not satisfy McClaren.

David Beckham's recent performances for Real Madrid have improved his chances of a recall to the England team.

The former captain was dropped by England coach Steve McClaren after last year's World Cup. However, he has played well since being recalled to the Madrid team and set up all three goals in Tuesday's 3-2 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich.

"That's all you'll get from David Beckham. The reaction from every adversity he's ever gone through in his career, he's always bounced back and been professional and got on with his job," McClaren said Wednesday.

"A month ago, he would never play for Real Madrid again and there he is starring in a game against Bayern Munich and being man of the match."

McClaren wouldn't be the first coach to change his mind over Beckham.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello said last month that Beckham would never again play for the Spanish powerhouse. Beckham annoyed Capello by announcing on Jan. 11 that he would leave for the Los Angeles Galaxy when his contract expires in June.

Madrid had offered the midfielder a two-year extension.

After seeing Beckham train, Capello relented and Beckham has now played three straight games.

"It gives me a problem, one of the problems that you welcome, players putting pressure and performing well at the clubs," McClaren said. "Obviously that's a problem I'd rather have than not have."

The England coach suggested that Beckham would have to maintain his form to stand any chance of getting back on the team for next month's European Championship qualifiers against Israel and Andorra.

"It's four weeks before the squad will be announced, so we will see what happens within the four weeks," he said.

Unfortunately for Beckham, McClaren wasn't at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to see his standout performance on Tuesday.

The England coach had planned to go to the game because he is in Spain to look at Espanyol's Olympic stadium in Barcelona where England will face Andorra on March 24. He decided not to go the game because England midfielder Owen Hargreaves was not certain to play.

However, Hargreaves did play in the game and was involved in several midfield challenges on Beckham.

McClaren wants to go to Munich to watch the return March 7.

Soccer superstar David Beckham will have further tests Monday to determine the extent of the right knee injury he suffered during Sunday's Primera Liga match.

The injury is a blow to both player and club, with Real Madrid facing two massive road games this week at Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Barcelona in the Primera Liga.

Beckham, who signed a five-year, $250 million contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS earlier this year, appeared to suffer the injury midway through the second half of Sunday's match after mis-hitting a cross and running into the advertising hoardings behind the goal.

He stayed on the pitch for a while, seemingly in a bid to run off the injury. But with no apparent improvement, he was substituted by Antonio Cassano.

Back in Madrid's starting lineup after being suspended for last weekend's match at Atletico Madrid, had earlier hit the Getafe crossbar with a 25-yard thunderbolt in the first half.

The former England captain also was involved in the build-up to Madrid's equalizer just before half-time, which led to Ruud van Nistelrooy slotting home from the penalty spot to earn his side a 1-1 draw.

Soccer superstar David Beckham will miss a month with ligament damage in his right knee that should not affect his American debut later this year.

The prognosis was announced Monday by Real Madrid, Beckham's team in the Spanish Primera Liga. A statement on the club's web site said Beckham has "a grade II sprain to the internal lateral ligament of the right knee. The estimated time he will be out is around four weeks."

Beckham, 31, suffered the injury in the second half of Sunday's match with Getafe. The former England captain underwent tests Monday at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground, where the damage was confirmed.

In January, Beckham signed a staggering five-year, $250 million deal to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS this summer, when his contract with Real Madrid expires.

Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas said in a statement that the team "did not expect this injury to affect his arrival in Los Angeles or his debut with the Galaxy."

The immediate future is a different story. Beckham already had been omitted from Madrid's squad for Wednesday's Champions League match against Bayern Munich. He also will miss this weekend's clash with archrival Barcelona and perhaps three more Primera Liga games.

Beckham will be unable to play for a European All-Star team in a charity match at Manchester United on March 13. The injury also scuttles any chance Beckham had of playing for England in Euro 2008 qualifying matches vs. Israel and Andorra.

The injury occurred when Beckham attempted a cross and ran into the advertising hoardings behind the goal. He stayed on the pitch in an attempt to run off the injury but, in obvious discomfort, was replaced by Antonio Cassano in the 69th minute.
