Real Madrid should be boosted by the return of David Beckham from suspension for this weekend's Primera Liga revenge match with Recreativo Huelva.

Beckham, who will play for Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer, was forced to sit out last Saturday's thrilling 4-3 home victory over Espanyol after picking up a booking in the previous match against Sevilla that resulted in a one-match ban.

Although Madrid managed to see off Espanyol without Beckham, coach Fabio Capello could hand an immediate recall to the former England captain for Sunday's game as the Spanish giants look to consolidate top spot in La Liga.

Beckham has been in fine form since returning from a six-week injury layoff last month.

Beckham, 32, has a maximum of four Primera Liga matches left before he leaves Madrid for the Galaxy, who signed him to a five-year, $250 million deal.

The first of those four games sees Madrid travel to Huelva this weekend looking to make amends for their 3-0 home defeat to Recre in the final match before the winter break in December.

After that, Madrid completes its campaign with two home matches against Deportivo La Coruna and final-day opponents Real Mallorca, with a tricky away trip against fifth-place Real Zaragoza in between.

Madrid moved to the top of the table after beating Espanyol to record its seventh win in eight league matches, climbing above two-time reigning champions Barcelona, which was held to a 1-1 home draw by lowly Real Betis on Sunday.

Both Madrid and Barca have 66 points but Capello's men are top due to their superior head-to-head record against the Catalan side this season.

Madrid won the most recent of its 29 league titles in the 2002-03 season, while they have failed to win a single major honor since Beckham joined the club in the summer of 2003.

Pele arrived on American soil in 1975 to give North American soccer life. David Beckham's arrival three decades later is meant to give it a lift.

The Brazilian soccer hero said Wednesday that Beckham's highly anticipated debut later this summer with the Los Angeles Galaxy is not unlike his own.

There's the same fevered excitement, reflected in the number of people inquiring about tickets. Both international icons found their way to cities comfortable in the spotlight. And passionate fans and curious observers alike are eager to see what Beckham will bring to the Galaxy.

        And to soccer in America.

"It's almost the same," said Pele, appearing untouched by age. "The game wasn't as popular (in the U.S.) when we came. The first year was rough. The league was a new league."

After a brilliant international career, Pele joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. His first game was played at Downing Stadium on New York City's Randall's Island, a mud pitch painted green.

His team was made up of players just out of college. Few had professional experience, much less time with international clubs.

"I remember when we played at San Jose, we lost 2 to 1," Pele recalled. "I said, 'My God, what am I going to do here?"'

Pele primed the pump, though, and many European stars soon came to the United States. Germany's Franz Beckenbauer and Brazilian Carlos Alberto turned the Cosmos into the Yankees of professional soccer. The game took off, the Cosmos drawing a sellout crowd of nearly 78,000 to the new Giants Stadium in August 1977.

But the league struggled financially and by 1984 it had folded. It wasn't until the United States reached the World Cup in 1990 -- its first trip in 40 years -- that the sport again attracted a following.

The 1994 World Cup, played in stadiums across the United States, drew a record 3.6 million spectators, and helped ensure the successful launch of Major League Soccer two years later.

Now the MLS is hoping Beckham will provide another shot of momentum.

"The thing with Beckham, they've got everything set up already," said Pele, who was in New York for a promotional event for GolTV, an English language soccer network in the United States. "The league is OK. The team is established. They have done a lot to get everything down."

Forget the muddy field in the middle of the East River. Beckham signed a five-year deal and will play in the dazzling Home Depot Center, one of many soccer-specific stadiums built for MLS teams in recent years. He will also be joining a team that won league titles in 2002 and 2005.

"In this moment, the MLS is more prepared than it was then," said Enzo Francescoli, who led the Uruguayan national team in two World Cups and now is chief executive of GolTV.

"Ten, 12 years the MLS has in this project," Francescoli said. "Finally coming here are the best players. Maybe it starts with Beckham and (Colombian forward Juan Pablo) Angel, and maybe in the future more players."

There is a rumor that Zinedine Zidane -- the French star known as much for head butting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final as for his illustrious career -- is considering following Beckham to the United States.

Zidane retired after the French lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. But Christian Dior's first male model certainly has the name recognition and rock star persona to draw more attention to the game stateside.

"If he comes, he comes this year," Francescoli said. "The next year, I think it's impossible. But I know Zinedine. For me, he doesn't want to play anymore."

For his part, Beckham insists he still wants to play. The former England captain seems intent on proving he has not lost a step, while telling anyone who will listen about his desire to grow the game in the United States.

That approach has many recalling another era.

"It's almost the same," Pele said. "There are a lot of similarities."

Los Angeles Galaxy general manager Alexei Lalas has said he is concerned David Beckham's recall to the England team might interfere with his appearances for his new Major League Soccer club.

Beckham signed a five-year, 250-million-dollar deal with the Californian club earlier this season when he was out of favour with the England team.

However England coach Steve McClaren has decided to recall the former England skipper for matches against Brazil on Friday at Wembley and then a Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia the following Wednesday.

England have four crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers during September and October and that would put Beckham out of domestic action for the Major League Soccer outfit.

Galaxy have sold thousands of season tickets on the back of his arrival, but Beckham's surprise recall could mean he could be on duty for England against Israel, Russia twice and Estonia instead of playing in the MLS.

Lalas admits they are concerned over Beckham's international situation from a business point of view, and hinted he may not be released for any non-competitive games.

Lalas, speaking on BBC Radio Five's Sportsweek programme, said: "From a business perspective it is not the greatest news because we are selling the team with David Beckham and a lot of people are excited to see him play with the Galaxy.

"We will deal with it from a business perspective, but for us to say one of our players is representing England internationally is a great thing.

"There are business challenges but there is an educated public here when it comes to this international game we play. We recognise that when we are going out and getting these stars, they have responsibilities domestically and internationally.

"It is no different than when our American players are called up to play in different tournaments. We lose them at different times and we deal with it on the field and off it.

"I don't want to stand in the way of a player representing his country but we have to be prudent and understand they have to be the appropriate games. I would think they would have to be competitive matches.

"If it works out scheduling wise, we would be happy to let him go. But he has a responsibility on and off the field to our organisation and to our support. I think he is excited about pursuing that responsibility."

The Galaxy chief added: "He recognises that responsibility to the Galaxy and to the sport in the United States. I represented my country and I know what it means. It is something above money, it is something you take with you forever."

David Beckham's chance of starting for England improved when teammate Aaron Lennon withdrew Sunday from games against Brazil and Estonia because of a knee injury.

The 20-year-old Tottenham winger limped off after 10 minutes of Friday's England "B" victory over Albania. A scan on Saturday ruled him out of an exhibition against Brazil on June 1 at Wembley and the European Championship qualifier at Estonia on June 6, according to the English Football Association.

Beckham was recalled to the England team this week by coach Steve McClaren after being overlooked for nine matches since last year's World Cup.

After replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson at the end of the World Cup, McClaren dropped Beckham, the former England captain. McClaren said he didn't see a future on the team for the 32-year-old Real Madrid midfielder.

Beckham's recently improved play prompted McClaren to change his mind

Beckham, who has played 94 games for his country, signed a deal to play for the MLS's Los Angeles Galaxy next month.

Steve McClaren and David Beckham have agreed to take a low-key approach to the former England skipper's return to the international fold.

After missing all nine games since McClaren has been in charge, Beckham has answered his country's call and is expected to win his 95th cap on Friday when England tackles Brazil at Wembley before moving to within four of his century in the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia on June 6.

However, rather than make his return to a fanfare and the intense glare of publicity which have become such a feature of his life, both on and off the field, Beckham wants to become just one of the boys again.

With McClaren's full cooperation, the 32-year-old Real Madrid star has opted to snub all interview requests ahead of the Brazil encounter.

Instead, Beckham is determined to let his feet do the talking for him.

"When I spoke to David two weeks ago, we agreed to try and keep everything low-key," revealed McClaren. "I know him well enough and I know he just wants to play. That is why he doesn't want to speak to anyone.

"Sometimes the attention surrounding David can run out of control but that is not his fault, it is just the hype that surrounds him. We just want David Beckham the player, performing on the pitch and that is all we are going to focus on for the next 10 days."

Having axed Beckham in such a public manner immediately after succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson as England coach last summer, McClaren has swallowed a huge slice of humble pie in offering the midfielder a recall.

After all the talk of 'moving on' from a shoddy series of World Cup performances, it appears to be more a case of back to the future for McClaren now, with Steven Gerrard again set to partner Frank Lampard in central midfield for Friday's friendly with Brazil.

Yet, in the knowledge a failure to beat Estonia in the far more significant Euro 2008 qualifier in Tallinn next week will almost certainly cost him his job, McClaren claims he would have been "foolish" not to follow Fabio Capello's lead and usher Beckham back from the wilderness.

"You've got to respect the work Fabio Capello is doing at Real Madrid," McClaren said. "He has had the same problems as me. He had no hesitation about bringing David back when he was on form and that has changed the fortunes of Real Madrid. "I would be very foolish to ignore that."

David Beckham is facing a race against time to be healthy for Real Madrid's important Primera Liga match with Real Zaragoza this weekend after picking up an ankle injury with the English national team.

The midfielder appeared to turn his ankle during the first half of England's 3-0 win over Estonia Wednesday night, and was substituted in the 68th minute before immediately undergoing treatment on the problem area.

Madrid announced on its medical bulletin Thursday that Beckham had strained the internal lateral ligament in his left ankle, and that the injury would be monitored over the next 24-48 hours while he was undergoing medical treatment and physiotherapy.

The 32-year-old has not yet been ruled out of Saturday evening's match at Zaragoza, but his participation must now be a concern for Madrid coach Fabio Capello.

Beckham has been in scintillating form for Madrid recently, and has helped the club move to within striking distance of its first league title since 2003 - and the former England captain's first piece of major silverware since joining the Spanish giants.

With two games remaining, Madrid is level with Barcelona at 72 points at the top of the Primera Liga standings, but Capello's side holds the upper hand due to its better head-to-head record against the Catalan outfit this season.

The fifth-placed Zaragoza has lost just twice in 18 league games at its La Romareda stadium this season.

David Beckham's successful return to the England team could be Major League Soccer's loss.

While MLS and the Los Angeles Galaxy say they are happy that Beckham has resumed his international career, the former national team captain could miss six more games for his new club as he tries to get his country to the 2008 European Championship.

"I've already said that LA Galaxy will do everything possible to keep me playing for my country and I suppose you could say that in my two games back we're unbeaten," Beckham said after two of his trademark crosses set up goals in England's 3-0 Group E victory at Estonia on Wednesday.

Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas says Beckham's statement that the MLS club would allow him to play for his country was "absolutely 100 percent correct."

"We consider it an incredible honor to have our players playing for their national team, and think it's a wonderful statement on David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy," Lalas said.

The problem for Galaxy fans is that England's next six matches, including an Aug. 22 friendly against Germany at Wembley, clash with MLS games.

Under contract to Real Madrid, Beckham is already missing the first half of the MLS season. If he's called up each time by England, he will be away for six more.

The day after the match against Germany, the Galaxy faces Chivas USA. On the same day, Sept. 8, that England hosts Israel in a Euro 2008 match, the Galaxy plays Colorado. England hosts group rival Russia four days later and the Galaxy takes on Chivas on Sept. 13. England hosts Estonia Oct. 13 when the Galaxy meets Toronto and, when England goes to Russia four days later, the LA team is preparing for a visit to the New York Red Bulls on Oct. 18.

Then, if the Galaxy makes it to the MLS Cup Nov. 18, Beckham may be needed for England's Nov. 21 game at home to Croatia.

Even on the games that don't clash, it seems inconceivable that Beckham could play a game in Europe, fly up to 6,000 miles and play another the following day.

Wednesday's victory at Estonia was Beckham's first competitive game for his country since the World Cup. He was dropped by coach Steve McClaren and only recalled two weeks ago. He missed nine England games but has starred for Real Madrid in its surge toward a possible Spanish league title. Beckham can win his first major trophy with Real Madrid if the team beats Zaragoza -- and FC Barcelona and Sevilla lose -- this weekend in the Spanish league.

"I'd love to be in the next squad and Steve has made that clear: if I'm performing and playing like I've been playing recently, I'll be in the squad," said Beckham, who has now played 96 times for England and hopes to become the fifth to reach 100 appearances.

"Of course there's always pressure about staying in the team. But am I on trial? I'm not sure about that."

Fans must be wondering why he was left out in the first place. Beckham has made major contributions in three of his past four appearances for his country.

And yet, McClaren remains noncommittal on whether Beckham has re-established his place in the team.

"We'll see when the next squad is announced (in August)," McClaren said. "He answers everyone with his performance on the field. I think he's done that in the last two games."

David Beckham has been included on the Real Madrid roster for Saturday's Primera Liga match at Real Zaragoza.

Beckham had been in doubt to play after sustaining an ankle injury during England's Euro 2008 qualifying win against Estonia, 3-0, on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old was unable to take full part in training alongside his teammates on Friday, but was named to the 20-man travelling party to Zaragoza.

Beckham, who left the club's Valdebebas training ground on Friday wearing an ankle support, has a maximum of two competitive games remaining with Madrid before he leaves to join the Major League Soccer's Los Angles Galaxy this summer.

Beckham left Madrid's training ground wearing an ankle support but manager Fabio Capello said: "He has not done any technical training today, only running. He says he is feeling a little pain but that he is okay and will be there Saturday."

Capello said of Beckham's performances for England: "He played as well as he has been doing at Real Madrid. He was an important player in those two games, his cross for the second goal (against Estonia) was extraordinary."

Beckham, who has yet to win a major honour for Madrid since joining the Spanish giants from Manchester United in 2003, is leaving the club this summer to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy in a $250 million five-year deal.
