David Beckham will play for Real Madrid at Zaragoza on Saturday despite a left ankle injury.

"I'm going to travel to Zaragoza and I'm going to play," Beckham, who did not train with the team Friday, told sports daily Marca.

Beckham could win his first major trophy with Madrid if the team beats Zaragoza -- and FC Barcelona and Sevilla lose -- this weekend. Madrid leads two-time defending champion Barcelona on head-to-head results. Both have 72 points, two more than Sevilla, with two games to go.

The England midfielder was hit on the ankle early in his team's European Championship qualifying win over Estonia.

"It hurts but I want to play," Beckham said.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello also said after training that Beckham would be fit for the match.

"Today he didn't do a technical training, he only jogged," Capello said. "He says it hurts a bit but that he'll be fine to play tomorrow."

Madrid is chasing its record 30th Spanish league title -- and its first major trophy in four years.

"I hope he gets better. David wants to play the last two matches that he has left with Real Madrid, and I know he will, with that mind-set," Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy said.

After the season, Beckham will head to the United States to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Beckham has been very important for us down the home stretch and he wants to leave here with a title. It would be a dream come true for all of us," Van Nistelrooy said.

Capello said Beckham's performances in his two games with England -- the win against Estonia and a tie in a friendly against Brazil -- were on par with his recent games for the Spanish club.

"It seemed to me he played just like he's been playing with Real Madrid," Capello said. "He was important in those two matches because for that second goal (against Estonia) he made an extraordinary cross."

Capello said Saturday's match against Zaragoza will be played with both teams under pressure for different reasons.

"I'm glad that Zaragoza needs to win so to qualify for UEFA next year. They won't be relaxed so that'll make for a tough match for both teams. Psychologically, it'll be the same for both sides," Capello said.

Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham is fully aware of the threat posed by Real Zaragoza to his side's hopes of winning the Primera Liga title.

Leaders Madrid take on fifth-place Zaragoza at La Romareda tonight, knowing there is a chance they could be crowned champions after the final whistle if results in the penultimate round of La Liga fixtures go their way.

However, it is unlikely to be straightforward for Madrid against a Zaragoza side who boast an impressive home record this season and are also in need of points for a UEFA Cup spot.

"Zaragoza are a tough team," Beckham said. "They have Cesar, who used to play here (for Real Madrid) and he is a very good goalkeeper. And not only him. They have more players in their team who can damage us. It is going to be a very difficult and important game."

Beckham looks set to be involved in the clash even though he came back from international duty with England in midweek suffering from an ankle injury. The 32-year-old trained away from his teammates on Friday, but he was named in Fabio Capello's 20-man squad for the potentially crucial trip to Zaragoza, where Madrid will be looking to take a step closer to their first league title since 2003.

"I think that it is a great game for all of us and for me," said Beckham in the Spanish newspaper AS. "I always like the big occasions, I like to play in the big games."

For Madrid to win the title on Saturday, they must become only the third team to defeat Zaragoza at La Romareda in 19 league matches this term, while also needing nearest rivals Barcelona and Sevilla to slip up in their games.

Barca, who are level on 72 points with Madrid but have an inferior head-to-head record against Capello's men this season, are at home to Espanyol, while third-place Sevilla are two points behind heading into their clash at Real Mallorca.

David Beckham and Real Madrid remained on course to win the Primera Liga title after a dramatic night in which the likely destination of the league trophy swung between the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp.

Madrid started the night level on points with Barcelona but on top of the table courtesy of a better head-to-head record.

Madrid has not won the title since 2003 while Beckham, who signed for Real in 2004, has yet to win significant silverware with the club - which he will leave this summer to join the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The capital club salvaged a last-gasp 2-2 draw at fifth-placed Real Zaragoza on Saturday night while Barca was denied by another late goal as Raul Tamudo handed city rivals Espanyol a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp.

Sevilla remains the third team in contention even though it too was held, 0-0 at Real Mallorca. Juande Ramos' men are two points off the pace with just one round of fixtures to go.

There was drama aplenty at La Romareda as Madrid had to come from behind twice to grab a vital point.

A Diego Milito penalty put the hosts ahead after 32 minutes with Ruud van Nistelrooy levelling with a header 12 minutes into the second half.

Milito's second of the evening seemed to have settled matters after 63 minutes but the prolific Van Nistelrooy bundled home an equalizer with time running out.

The Madrid fans' delight intensified further seconds later when news filtered through of Espanyol's equalizer.

It was nothing more than the visitors deserved after an enterprising display which threatened to flounder at the feet and the hand of Leo Messi.

The Argentinian had earlier equalized Tamudo's opener with a blatant handball which was missed by the match officials.

Messi then put Frank Rijkaard's side in front only for Espanyol skipper Tamudo to slip the ball past Victor Valdes to stun the Nou Camp crowd.

The excitement in Zaragoza and Barcelona was not seen in Palma as Sevilla struggled to a stalemate although it can take credit for battling gamely after the 73rd-minute dismissal of Serbia defender Ivica Dragutinovic.

Next week, Madrid take on Mallorca at the Bernabeu, Barca goes to already-relegated Gimnastic Tarragona while Sevilla hosts a Villarreal side still in contention for a UEFA Cup place.

The Yellow Submarine made it seven wins on the trot after seeing off Athletic Bilbao 3-1.

Relegation-threatened Athletic took the lead through Andoni Iraola midway through the first half but the hosts stormed back to win thanks to two goals from Diego Forlan, the first from the penalty spot, and an Aldekoaotalora Ustaritz own goal.

Atletico Madrid started the day in sixth but slipped out of the UEFA Cup spots after going down 3-2 at home to Celta Vigo.

Maxi Rodriguez and Fernando Baiano grabbed a double each with Yao Yago also netting for the visitors.

That result kept Celta's hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Hristo Stoichkov's men are third bottom but now just a point adrift of Bilbao and Real Betis, which was crushed 5-0 at home by Osasuna - Ion Erice Sola scoring twice.

Real Sociedad is on the brink of relegation after missing a penalty and failing to utilize a two-man advantage against Racing Santander.

It seemed their hopes of staying in the top flight were finally looking up when, having dominated the preceding 86 minutes, Santander's Victor Vitolo and Felipe Melo were shown red cards and Sociedad was awarded a potentially season-saving penalty.

But, with the stakes piled high, Mikel Alonso struck tamely at Juan Calatayud and Real finished with a point when it should have had three.

Now, ahead of their must-win trip to Valencia, Real sits three points off safety and need Bilbao to lose to struggling Levante and Celta Vigo to slip against Getafe if it is to stay up.

Valencia will at least have three key men suspended for that game barring appeals after Santiago Canizares, Roberto Ayala and Carlos Marchena were all sent off as Los Che lost 4-2 at Levante.

Olivier Kapo also saw red for the hosts, who eventually prevailed thanks largely to two goals from Mustapha Riga.

David Beckham's ankle injury is threatening to cast a shadow over what should be a fairytale ending to the former England captain's Real Madrid career.

If Madrid beats Real Mallorca in next weekend's final round of Primera Liga fixtures, it will be crowned Spanish champions for the first time since 2003 and the 30th time in its history.

That would also give Beckham, who is leaving the Spanish giants for Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy this summer, his first major trophy with Madrid since joining from Manchester United almost four years ago.

However, the ankle problem he sustained while on international duty with England last week could yet stymie Beckham's farewell celebrations.

The 32-year-old played all of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Real Zaragoza, a result that kept Madrid top of the Primera Liga table with one match remaining, but he needed treatment on his troublesome left ankle after pulling up while running with the ball late on.

Beckham was able to continue until the final whistle, but the Madrid web site reported after the game that the midfielder appeared to have suffered a recurrence of his ankle problem.

The injury will now be monitored over the coming days to see if Beckham will be fit to play in next Sunday's game against Mallorca, although Madrid coach Fabio Capello is confident of good news.

"It does not worry me because it is the same that he had with the England national team," the Italian said. "I think that next Sunday he will play with the team."

Beckham's dream of winning the Primera Liga title looked set to be crushed as Madrid trailed 2-1 at Zaragoza heading into the dying minutes of Saturday's match, while at the same time title rivals Barcelona led 2-1 at home to Espanyol.

Both Madrid and Barca went into the penultimate round of fixtures level on 72 points, but Capello's men held the upper hand due to their better head-to-head record against the two-time reigning champions this season.

Had the scores remained as they were, Barca would have held a three-point advantage ahead of the final weekend, but last-gasp equalizers at both grounds - by Espanyol's Raul Tamudo and Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy - put Madrid back in pole position.

"I think it has been a peculiar game, and a peculiar round of matches with the draws of Sevilla, Barcelona and us," Capello said. "We are happy with this result. We have played against a team who have players of great quality. If I am honest, in the first half we played without order. In the second we played much better, with more calmness and always trying to get back into the game with fight, heart and team spirit."

Joe Cole has backed David Beckham to star for England even after he moves to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.

Chelsea and England midfielder Cole is confident Beckham, who has signed a five-year $250 million deal with Galaxy, can combine a club career in America with his international duties.

"You should never write him off," Cole said.

Beckham, who returned to the England team in style for the draw with Brazil and the Euro 2008 qualifying win over Estonia, insists he can play for his country "for years to come".

Many doubt whether he will be able to combine an international career with playing for the Galaxy, where the standard is below the English Premiership or the top European leagues.

But Beckham's England teammate Cole has no doubts.

"People should have learned years ago never to right Becks off. He is a very special character," Cole said. "People said that in 1998 (when he was sent off at the World Cup) and he just came back and proved people wrong. As a sportsman that is the most satisfying thing. When you prove people wrong it's a great thing and Becks will prove himself, I am sure of it.

"When he pulls on an England shirt he puts in a performance most of the time. He played brilliantly in the two games. He made three of the four goals and if he keeps doing that we will all be delighted."

Cole is backing Beckham all the way.

"He has nothing to prove to anyone," Cole said. "His career has been fantastic, particularly for England, he has come back and looks 10 years younger. He is brilliant.

"Crossing the ball is what he has been renowned for but he brings more to the party. When he is not creating goals he is working so hard for the team, That is what we need. We have four attacking midfielders so we all have to make little sacrifices."

Cole suggested Beckham's international rejuvenation could be linked with the fact he no longer carries the pressure and responsibilities of captaincy.

"Maybe Becks thrived on it, a little less responsibility was maybe good for him. When you are on the pitch you have (Steven) Gerrard, Beckham, (Frank) Lampard, (John) Terry, (Michael) Owen - they have all captained top sides," Cole told Britain's BBC Radio 5 Live. "There are lots of leaders and you don't just look to one man."

Beckham's first game for the Galaxy looks set to be a friendly against Cole's Chelsea side on July 21.

David Beckham's representatives have dismissed reports suggesting the former England captain could pull out of a move to Major League Soccer to remain in Spain with Real Madrid.

In comments reported on Sunday, Real president Ramon Calderon claimed the club was going to make an effort to keep Beckham at the Bernabeu, rather than allowing him to go through with a move to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

But a spokesman for Beckham told PA SportsTicker his client did not want to go back on the deal.

"There is no intention of getting out of the Galaxy contract," he said.

"David is looking forward to going to LA - but he wants to end his career at Real Madrid on a high note first, by winning the league."

The 32-year-old has agreed to join the Galaxy on July 1 after his deal with Real expires, but Real president Ramon Calderon was quoted in the Spanish press as saying there is a clause in the England midfielder's Galaxy contract which gives them an option to keep him.

"We need to sit down with him (Beckham), his representatives and with (Real Madrid sporting director Predrag) Mijatovic, look at this clause, and decide between us, but for me I would be delighted if he remained at the club," Calderon told the Spanish newspaper Marca.

"There was a bit of anger by the premature announcement of his exit, but we are now going to make an effort for him to stay."

A Los Angeles Galaxy spokesman, when contacted by PA SportsTicker, was unaware of the claims.

"I don't know anything about it, and won't have anything for you today," he said.

Beckham was told he had played his last game for Madrid by coach Fabio Capello when he agreed to join the Major League Soccer side in January. But he has been instrumental in its late title charge, with a victory over Real Mallorca next weekend now all that stands between it and the Primera Liga crown.

The midfielder, who suffered an ankle injury on duty for England against Estonia, played through the pain in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Real Zaragoza and Calderon paid tribute to the former Manchester United midfielder's courage and spoke of his desire for him to remain with the club.

"Beckham has shown that he is a great player, with great pride," Calderon said.

"He is playing at a great level and yesterday he fought even though he was half injured against Zaragoza. The Madrid supporters love him, and for me I would like him to remain in the team."

Capello revealed last month that Beckham's attitude and form had left him with no option but to go back on his word and restore him to the side and led the calls to end his international exile.

"I believe he has never been in better form in the last two years than he is now, and he agreed with me," said Capello at the time.

"I have told him I cannot understand how someone playing so well can be left out of his national team."

England manager Steve McClaren duly agreed and Beckham did not disappoint, starring on his return to the international fold.

First he delivered a trademark cross for the man who succeeded him as captain, John Terry, in the friendly against Brazil on June 1, before two more assists in the 3-0 victory in the Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia last week.

He was eventually replaced in the 68th minute to a standing ovation, and was seen to be nursing his left ankle from the dugout.

Beckham played the full 90 minutes in Saturday's dramatic draw at La Romareda but required treatment after aggravating the problem late on.

The injury has led to doubts being expressed over whether Beckham will be able to face Mallorca next week in the game which will determine whether Beckham's four-year search for a first major trophy in Spain comes to an end.

David Beckham is sticking to his plan: He's bound for the Los Angeles Galaxy next month -- regardless of what anyone says.

"There is no intention of getting out of the Galaxy deal or reneging on the Galaxy deal," agent Simon Oliveira told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon was quoted in the Spanish media as saying that he would try to persuade the England star to stay and would use an escape clause in Beckham's Galaxy contract to withdraw from the deal.

"We have to sit down with him, his representatives and with (Madrid sport director Predrag) Mijatovic, take a look at that clause and decide among us," said Calderon, speaking at the French Open final in Paris. "But for me, I would love it if he stayed at our club."

Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas told The Associated Press there is no escape clause in Beckham's contract.

"On the surface of it, it's a benign comment," Lalas said. "I don't doubt they would love nothing more than to have David Beckham continue with the team. Nothing has changed from our standpoint. We are eagerly awaiting his arrival."

Beckham's contract with Real Madrid ends June 30. Lalas said he expected Beckham to arrive in Los Angeles in mid-July and play in his first game shortly after that. Beckham has already bought a house in Los Angeles, Lalas said.

Oliveira stressed that Beckham, who has just returned to the England lineup, is eager for the next step in his career.

"David is looking forward to going to the States," Oliveira said. "But he wants to end his career at Real Madrid on a high note first, by winning La Liga."

Beckham could win his first major trophy with Madrid if the team beats Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next weekend in the last round.

Madrid rallied to a 2-2 tie at Zaragoza on Saturday, with Beckham starting for Madrid despite not being fully fit after spraining his ankle while playing for England against Estonia in a European Championship qualifier Wednesday. England won that game 3-0, with Beckham setting up two goals.

Barcelona and Madrid both have 73 points, though Madrid wins the title on head-to-head results if they remain tied in the standings. Sevilla has 71 points.

Asked if Beckham's recent play had made him more attractive to Real Madrid than when the deal was made, Lalas said, "I still think he is playing better than he ever has. I also don't believe he was playing as poorly as people made it out to be. If anything, he was the scapegoat for miserable performances of a team stock full of super stars."

"In life and soccer, timing is everything," Lalas added. "He recognized an opportunity as did we. He saw a great opportunity for him and his family, for a challenge, and to continue his professional soccer career. I don't think he's looked back since."

Associated Press Writer Harold Heckle in Madrid and Peter Prengaman in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

David Beckham missed training with Real Madrid on Tuesday due to his ankle injury.

The Los Angeles Galaxy-bound midfielder spent the morning in the gym as he bids to be fit for this weekend's season-ending Primera Liga match with Real Mallorca, where Madrid could win the title.

The former England captain strained the internal lateral ligament in his left ankle while on national-team duty last week. Despite not being able to take full part in training with Madrid on Friday, he was able to play in Saturday's Primera Liga match at Real Zaragoza.

However, the 32-year-old needed treatment on the ankle late in the 2-2 draw at La Romareda after pulling up while running with the ball.

Beckham was able to play the entire match, but the Madrid web site reported later that he appeared to have suffered a recurrence of his ankle problem.

If Madrid beats Mallorca it would clinch its first Primera Liga title since 2003.

Beckham, who has yet to win a major trophy since joining Madrid almost four years ago, will leave the Spanish giants at the end of the month to join Major League Soccer side Galaxy, with whom he has a five-year, $250 million contract.

David Beckham sat out training on Wednesday as Real Madrid continued its preparations for this weekend's Primera Liga finale.

The Los Angeles Galaxy-bound midfielder has not trained since suffering a recurrence of an ankle injury in the closing minutes of Saturday's dramatic 2-2 draw at Real Zaragoza.

Beckham initially damaged the ankle in England's 3-0 win in Estonia last Wednesday in the Euro 2008 qualifier.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello's team will clinch the Primera Liga title with victory over Real Mallorca at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

After Wednesday's training session, Capello met with club president Ramon Calderon.

Earlier this week the duo announced their intention to try to persuade Beckham to stay at Real Madrid beyond the end of his contract, which expires at the end of the month.

The idea was firmly rebuffed by Beckham and Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas, and the player will join the Major League Soccer side next month.

Los Angeles Galaxy-bound David Beckham admitted on Thursday that his final season at Real Madrid has probably been the toughest of his career.

The 32-year-old former England captain, who is joining the Major League Soccer side on a five-year, $250 million deal in July, will play his last game for the Spanish giants on Sunday against Real Mallorca.

A victory would see Madrid wins its first La Liga title since 2003.

"It has been possibly the toughest season and the most difficult season of my career, on and off the field," Beckham said at a news conference.

"1998 was difficult, but I think this season I have gone through things I never thought were possible, and it has been difficult."

Beckham was heavily criticized after England's early exit at the 1998 World Cup, in which he was sent off against Argentina in a second-round match.

This season's traumas saw an emotional Beckham announce he was giving up the England captaincy after the 2006 World Cup.

New England coach Steve McClaren left the former Manchester United star out of his first squad, which began a nine-month international exile.

Beckham also lost his place in the Madrid lineup and with the club announcing he would not be offered a new contract, he signed with Galaxy.

Beckham admitted when times were at their toughest, he was thankful for the support he received from those around him.

"I've had a lot of friends, not just my family, not just my English friends but I've had a lot of other friends who have given me so much support while I've been at Real Madrid, and especially this season," Beckham said.

"Being at Real Madrid has always been an amazing honor. Everybody knows how I feel about playing for this club, and playing in that white shirt. I'm sad to be leaving. I did not expect to be leaving, but everybody knows what has happened in the last six months for me."

Beckham, back on the England team, admitted how being left out by Madrid midseason had affected him.

"It is the most difficult time in my career - not being involved in training, not being involved in matches, and certain things that were being said about me that were not true," he said.

The midfielder's recent form has helped put Madrid within touching distance of the Spanish title and he is determined to end a turbulent year on a high note.

"I haven't won anything in four years (at Madrid) and hopefully I can change that on Sunday," Beckham said.

"My best memory so far was signing for Real Madrid, I'm hoping that will change on Sunday, when my memories here will be taken to another level by winning something. I hope to reward the fans with a trophy."

Beckham trained Thursday after resting his injured ankle Monday and Tuesday.

David Beckham continued his recovery from an ankle injury on Friday as the Major League Soccer-bound midfielder seeks to end his Real Madrid career on a high note this weekend.

Beckham has been steadily stepping up his fitness work this week as he looks set to overcome the left ankle problem he picked up playing for England last week in time to face Real Mallorca on Sunday - a game in which Madrid can clinch the Primera Liga title.

On Tuesday and Wednesday - the first two sessions of the week - the former England captain was unable to train alongside his Madrid teammates, but there were more positive signs on Thursday when he jogged around the pitch at the club's Valdebebas training ground alongside fitness coach Jose Luis San Martin.

Beckham again did some specialized training with San Martin on Friday, of which Madrid reported about on its web site.

"Before the majority of the squad finished their indoor workouts, David Beckham went outside to jog and run alongside fitness trainer Jose Luis San Martin," the statement said.

"The Englishman has been suffering from a sprained left ankle but has spent all week pushing his recovery to be in top form for Sunday, when he brings his career with Real Madrid to an end by hopefully 'making a dream come true'."

Madrid will win the title, and its first major honor since Beckham joined the club in 2003, if it beats Mallorca at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

It will also be Beckham's last game for the Spanish giants before he joins the Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer.

David Beckham's changing fortunes reached their zenith on Sunday when he claimed his first trophy with Real Madrid following the 3-1 win over Real Mallorca..

The 32-year-old England international will join the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS next month on a contract worth $250 million over five years.

Beckham appeared to be marking time before his move to Galaxy after being frozen out, at various stages, by both England boss Steve McClaren and Madrid manager Fabio Capello.

However, the former England captain has seen his fortunes transform recently. P

A SportsTicker spotlights the major changes:

May 26. ENGLAND RECALL. Beckham had not played for England since the World Cup in Germany last summer. He had appeared to be guaranteed a place in the team when Sven-Goran Eriksson was manager and was devastated to be dropped when Steve McClaren took over.

A difficult Euro 2008 campaign saw fans demanding Beckham's recall during the games against Israel and Andorra. Beckham's form and influence at Real Madrid meant the England boss could not ignore him and he was picked last month.

June 1. ENGLAND vs. BRAZIL. Beckham made his first appearance for England since he limped off in the World Cup quarterfinal against Portugal last summer. When his name was read out before the match, there was a huge cheer from England fans.

Beckham did not disappoint. Inside 15 minutes he almost set up striker Michael Owen for a goal, before nearly opening the scoring with a trademark freekick which curled inches wide. Another Beckham freekick from the right curled to the far post where captain John Terry headed a goal.

June 6. ENGLAND vs. ESTONIA. England took a 1-0 lead as Beckham, suffering from an ankle injury, curled a pass which striker Peter Crouch lifted into the net over the goalkeeper. Beckham later sent over a cross which Owen scored from.

June 17. REAL MADRID. Beckham claimed the Primera Liga in his final season at the Spanish club. The former England captain had been instrumental in Madrid's surge to the top of the table in the second half of the season. He had been told by Capello he would never play for Madrid again following his decision to move to MLS.

Capello recalled Beckham and admitted last month he had never seen him "in such good form either mentally or physically." The midfielder started Sunday's win but was substituted in the second half.
