  • Internazionale celebrated the defense of its Serie A title by defeating Empoli, 3-1, at the San Siro on Sunday evening.

Roberto Mancini's men clinched the Scudetto last weekend with a 2-1 win at Siena and they followed up that result with another solid display against a team whose Champions League hopes are fading fast.

Julio Cruz opened the scoring for the Nerazzurri and even though Luca Saudati equalized 12 minutes into the second half, Alvaro Recoba quickly restored the home side's advantage.

Dejan Stankovic made it 3-1 a minute later as Inter edged closer to breaking Juventus' all-time Serie A points record of 91. Inter currently has 87 with four games to go.

Empoli dropped to seventh place, eight points behind the Champions League places.

Second-placed Roma were held to a goalless draw in a forgettable city derby against Lazio.

The Biancoceleste remain fourth after being passed by AC Milan on Saturday, the Rossoneri winning, 1-0, at Torino thanks to Clarence Seedorf's first-half goal.

Palermo's hopes of a top-four finish are back on track thanks to a 2-1 win at Livorno.

Eugenio Corini gave the Sicilians the lead from the penalty spot at the start of the second half only for Cesar to equalize with a spot-kick of his own 10 minutes later.

David Di Michele grabbed the winner with 15 minutes to go. Sampdoria won, 2-0, at Siena with goals from Christian Maggio and Gennaro Delvecchio.

The title race may have been sewn up last weekend, but the fight to avoid relegation continues to rumble on.

Parma is the form side toward the lower reaches and the upturn in fortunes under Claudio Ranieri continued on Sunday as the Gialloblu won, 2-1, against Cagliari.

Ranieri's men are three points clear of the drop zone thanks to Andrea Gasbarroni's 74th-minute penalty winner.

Earlier, Igor Budan had put the home side ahead only for Daniele Conti to equalize 19 minutes into the second half.

Catania did its hopes of avoiding the drop the power of good after a 1-0 win at eight-man Udinese in a bad-tempered encounter at the Stadio Friuli.

Gionatha Spinesi scored the decisive goal with a highly controversial penalty shortly after the break to hand the visitors their first win in 13 Serie A games and lift them four points clear of the drop zone.

Catania's task was made a whole lot easier by the home side's indiscipline, with Marco Motta, Antonio Di Natale and Andrea Dossena all seeing red in a fiery second half as Udinese players struggled to contain their anger at the penalty decision.

Second-bottom Messina remain deep in trouble after a goalless draw at home to Atalanta, while basement club Ascoli are all but gone.

The Sicilians are 13 points adrift of safety after going down, 3-2, at home to fellow strugglers Reggina.

After Michele Fini opened the scoring for the hosts, two goals from Nicola Amoruso and one from Pasquale Foggia put the visitors from Reggio Calabria in charge. Substitute Massimo Bonanni pulled one back late on for Ascoli.

A dramatic final five minutes saw Reggina's Rolando Bianchi miss a penalty before Ascoli substitute Michelangelo Minieri was dismissed for a second bookable offense.

        • Messina and Ascoli have been relegated from Serie A after suffering defeats Sunday.

With Chievo, Cagliari and Torino all picking up wins - the latter at the expense of Ascoli - there is no way back for the bottom two.

Ascoli's Serie A fate was finally sealed with a single-goal defeat at Torino, which edged two points clear of the drop zone thanks to Alessandro Rosina's effort.
After two troubled seasons in the top flight of Italian soccer, Nedo Sonetti's side dropped back down to Serie B along with Messina after their relegation was finally mathematically confirmed.

The win could prove crucial for Torino, which moved up to 14th place with 36 points, although it is still realistic that any of the sides in the bottom half of the league could fall into the third and final relegation place with just three games remaining.

Hernan Crespo's second-half goal condemned Messina to Serie B next season as it lost, 1-0, to champions Internazionale.

The Argentina frontman made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring 19 minutes from time to maintain the Nerazzurri's already unassailable advantage at the summit.

The goal was a bitter blow for the Sicilians, who saw Arturo Di Napoli's penalty kick saved by Francesco Toldo only a few minutes earlier.

The defeat left Messina 10 points adrift of the last position of safety with only three games remaining.

Siena occupies the final relegation spot as its alarming late-season slide continued with a 3-1 defeat at Atalanta, its third straight loss. Siena had only itself to blame at the Stadio Azzurri D'Italia as it missed an early penalty and had two players sent off late.

Luca Ariatti put Atalanta ahead after 12 minutes before Daniele Corvia wasted a chance to level with a penalty miss in the 33rd minute. Simone Vergassola did equalize with another spot kick three minutes into the second half, but a wonder goal from Christian Vieri and Morris Carrozzieri's late header won it for Atalanta.

The visitors' misery was complete when Valerio Bertotto and Do Carmo Nieto Alberto both saw red in the final seconds.

Chievo and Cagliari both got priceless wins to pull themselves away from danger.

Sergio Pellissier's fourth-minute goal gave Chievo all three points against Parma, which is back in trouble themselves. Cagliari came from behind to beat 10-man Udinese, 2-1.

Sulley Muntari drew first blood for Udinese with a goal one minute before interval, but Davide Marchini fired the hosts level midway through the second period.

The Bianconeri's chances of taking all the points took a knock after 80 minutes when Vincenzo Iaquinta received a straight red for violent conduct. Cagliari substitute Andrea Capone made the visitors pay as he popped up with the winner five minutes from time.

At the top of the table, Roma sealed second place after first-half goals from Francesco Totti and Marco Cassetti proved enough to take the points at Palermo in a 2-1 win.

The hosts - whose UEFA Cup hopes were thrown into jeopardy by the result - pulled a goal back late on through Giovanni Tedesco that proved little more than consolation.

Lazio climbed to third by edging Livorno, 1-0, at the Stadio Olimpico.

Luis Jimenez's 27th-minute strike allowed the Eternal City outfit to return to winning ways, having failed take all three points from any of their previous four encounters. It moved ahead of AC Milan, which was held to a scoreless draw by Fiorentina as Kaka missed a penalty kick.

Surprise high-fliers Empoli moved back into the UEFA Cup places and left Catania still sweating over its top-flight status after a hard-fought 2-1 win at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Two goals in three first-half minutes from young striker Nicola Pozzi and Argentinian midfielder Sergio Almiron gave the home side control. The visitors pulled one back through Gionatha Spinesi, but Empoli held on for victory.

Sampdoria's faint hopes of clinching a UEFA Cup spot suffered a blow when it was held to a goalless home draw by Reggina. Walter Novellino's side are now six points adrift of sixth and the final European berth available via Serie A.

          • AC Milan striker Ronaldo could be out the rest of the season after pulling his left hamstring in practice.

Ronaldo was examined Saturday and further tests were planned over the next few days, the club said in a statement on its Web site.

The Brazilian striker was not included in Milan's squad to play Fiorentina in the Serie A on Sunday.

"I'm sorry because he was going through a great period," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "Now there's a risk that he'll be out just as the season draws to a close."

The Rossoneri are third in Italy's top division with four rounds remaining. Inter Milan already has won the title.

Ronaldo is ineligible for the Champions League final against Liverpool on May 23 because he played for former club Real Madrid in the early stages of the competition. He transferred to Milan in January.

              • AS Roma scored four goals in the first half hour to beat holders Inter Milan 6-2 in an extraordinary first leg of the Italian Cup final on Wednesday.

Captain Francesco Totti, whose team now take a healthy lead into next Thursday's second leg at the San Siro, gave the home side a dream start when he slammed in Rodrigo Taddei's pullback in the first minute.

Roma, who lost to Inter in the last two finals, were desperate to avoid a third straight defeat and quickly doubled their lead when Daniele de Rossi diverted a volley from Philippe Mexes into the net on five minutes.

Simone Perrotta made it 3-0 after sliding in to convert Cristian Chivu's low cross, which completely outwitted a dormant Inter defence.

The match had been brought forward to an early evening kickoff because of fears of crowd trouble and league champions Inter finally woke up when Hernan Crespo took advantage of a defensive error to round goalkeeper Doni to make it 3-1.

Last month Roma inflicted Inter's only league defeat this season and they took a big step towards thwarting a second successive league and cup double for Roberto Mancini's side when namesake Mancini rattled in the home side's fourth.

The Brazilian netted on the half hour after Inter keeper Francesco Toldo, preferred to usual number one Julio Cesar, could only palm away Christian Panucci's tempting cross.

                UNUSUALLY OPEN

Inter, without injured striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Walter Samuel, nearly scrambled the ball home to reduce the deficit late in the first period but Adriano could not finish as he continues to look a shadow of his former self.

The unusually open Italian final refused to revert to type in the second half with both defences leaving wide open spaces at the back.

Roma's raiding right back Panucci made it 5-1 on 54 minutes before Crespo hit back almost immediately when he nodded home Maicon's perfectly-flighted cross from a quick break.

Panucci was not finished though and netted from an acute angle late on to complete a memorable victory.

"We made a terrible start to the match and they started very well," Inter coach Mancini told RAI television. "Roma probably had more incentive than us. We have a match to play and we will see what we can do. We need a miracle."

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said in the run-up to the game that he would rather the final was played over 90 minutes and the Italian soccer authorities may look into his suggestion after such an entertaining first leg.

Inter and Roma, assured of second spot in Serie A, have dominated Italian football this season after Juventus were relegated and AC Milan deducted eight points for their parts in a match-fixing scandal.

Many have criticised the league for a lack of excitement this term but the two sides served up a superb feast to silence the detractors.

                    • Alessandro Del Piero scored twice in a 3-1 home win over Bologna on Saturday to leave Juventus on the brink of a return to Serie A.

Bologna forward Claudio Bellucci sprung the offside trap to give his side the lead but Del Piero rifled in from an acute angle to equalise on 37 minutes.

Del Piero then scored his 18th goal of the campaign with a twice-taken penalty five minutes from time before David Trezeguet wrapped up the points.

Juve will be promoted if Genoa lose at home to Triestina on Sunday and Napoli fail to win at Brescia on Tuesday in a game put back from this weekend because of security concerns.

Juventus, relegated to Serie B last season for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal, have 79 points with four games play while Genoa have 70 and Napoli 68 in the race for the two automatic promotion slots.

A small group of fans blocked the Juventus team bus as it arrived in Turin for the game and protested against club directors for what they see as a lack of ambition.

However, the supporters applauded manager Didier Deschamps and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who have both been linked with moves away from the club.

                      • Struggling Livorno, Parma, Siena and Torino all recorded wins to stay on course to avoid relegation as the fight to beat the drop took another twist Sunday.

With Ascoli and Messina already condemned to Serie B soccer next season, there is one more relegation place waiting to be filled. Even Livorno, in 11th, is not yet safe with just two rounds of fixtures left to play.

But Fernando Orsi's side moved three points clear of the bottom three after Antonio Filippini scored the only goal of the game as they beat Sampdoria, whose UEFA Cup hopes are now over.

Torino joined them on 39 points after pulling off the result of the day, a 1-0 win over high-flying Roma in the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a 14th-minute goal from veteran striker Roberto Muzzi.

One point further back are Parma, who put Messina to the sword with four goals in the space of 11 first-half minutes - one each from Zlatan Muslimovic and Andrea Gasbarroni and two from Giuseppe Rossi. Christian Rigano scored for the visitors.

Catania also have 38 points after a 1-1 draw with AC Milan, with Gionatha Spinesi canceling out Clarence Seedorf's early goal for the side from the San Siro.

Siena are one point above the drop zone after a 2-0 win over UEFA Cup chasing Empoli brought to a halt a run of three straight defeats.

Daniele Portanova gave them the lead on 12 minutes and their task was made easier when Richard Vanigli was sent off for the visitors on 34 minutes.

Substitute Massimo Maccarone sealed the win with the second goal in stoppage time. Reggina and Chievo's 1-1 draw leaves both clubs on 36 points after Rolando Bianchi equalized Matteo Brighi's opener for Chievo.

Despite their defeat, Empoli remain in the UEFA Cup qualification places, one point ahead of Palermo after the Sicilian side suffered a shock loss at rock-bottom Ascoli.

That victory was only Ascoli's second at home in the league all season and they did it the hard way, coming from 2-1 down at the break to win 3-2 thanks to second-half goals from Michele Paolucci and Viktor Boudianski.

Fabio Simplicio had opened the scoring for Palermo and Radoslaw Matusiak put them ahead for the second time after Boudianski had grabbed the first equalizer for the hosts.

Fiorentina went fifth with a 1-0 win over Cagliari, Giampaolo Pazzini scoring in the seventh minute to move the home side two points clear of Palmero and leave the visitors one point above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Hernan Crespo's hat trick gave Champions Internazionale a 4-3 win over Lazio, who stay third. Marco Materazzi scored the other Inter goal, while Goran Pandev, Massimo Mutarelli and Cristian Ledesma were on target for Lazio, who led 3-2 going with nine minutes to go and had Sebastiano Siviglia sent off.

Atalanta also come from behind to win against Udinese, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory. Gyan Asamoah scored twice for the hosts, while Atalanta's goals came from Riccardo Zampagna, Fernando Tissone and Christian Vieri.

                        • AS Roma won the Italian Cup on Thursday after a 2-1 defeat at holders Inter Milan gave them a 7-4 aggregate victory.

Inter, who have missed out on a second successive league and cup double, produced a spirited display but Roma's extraordinary 6-2 victory in last week's first leg proved too much.

Roberto Mancini's side had defeated Roma in the previous two finals but will have to make do with the league championship this season.

In-form Argentine striker Hernan Crespo arched his neck to score with a delightful header from Maicon's cross early in the second period to give the home side the lead.

Substitute Julio Cruz, who entered the fray in the first half for the injured Patrick Vieira, then slid in Luis Figo's pass on 56 minutes to spark hopes of an improbable comeback.

But it was never really on and the frustration boiled over for Mancini, who was sent from the dugout for protesting midway through the second half.

He tried to direct the team from the stands but any chance of a sensational turnaround evaporated when Inter defender Ivan Cordoba was sent off for a handball having received his first booking after just two minutes of the San Siro clash.

Roma then twisted the knife when Simone Perrotta turned in Francesco Totti's cross-shot seven minutes from time.

Right back Christian Panucci was dismissed for pulling back Inter's Alvaro Recoba in injury time but nothing could take the gloss off the win for Roma, who finished second to Inter in the league.

                          HELD ALOFT

Roma captain Totti proudly held the cup aloft only four days after the birth of his second child, Chanel.

"I dedicate this Italian Cup not only to my daughter Chanel but to all my family who are always close to me," he told reporters.

"We were used to seeing Inter always winning and it was right that we also lifted an important trophy. We came here with the knowledge that they could be beaten."

A few hundred Roma supporters were packed into the away end and were determined to make themselves heard as they celebrated their first Cup triumph since 1991.

Only a sprinkling of Inter fans had bothered to attend given the first leg score.

But the few that were in the stadium would have been encouraged by Inter's show and they could have scored more than two in the second period, with Recoba having the best chance only to be forced too wide after goalkeeper Doni's slip.

"We lost the Cup in the match at the Olimpico, but we didn't deserve to concede six goals," said Inter assistant coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

"We knew a comeback would not be easy. The boys gave their all, they couldn't have done any more. The match would have been different if we had scored in the first half."

                            • Chievo were the big winners in the Serie A survival race on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 win against already-relegated Ascoli.

With several teams still in the mix to join Ascoli and Messina in the second tier next season, it was imperative Chievo picked up three points and they did so thanks to Michele Marcolini`s goal two minutes before halftime.

The Veronese club could still go down but it would take a remarkable set of results for that to happen.

The Flying Donkeys have 39 points from 37 games and know a draw against Catania on the final day of the season will be enough for them to preserve their place among the elite.

Catania are just one point and two places above the drop zone after going down 1-0 at Sampdoria - Christian Zenoni grabbing the only goal 20 minutes into the second half.

Siena dropped into the bottom three after going down 2-1 at Palermo, who remain in the UEFA Cup qualifying spots.

Eugenio Corini and Andrea Caracciolo put the Sardinians in control before Massimo Maccarone grabbed a late consolation.

Siena`s defeat gave Reggina the chance to clamber out of the relegation places and they did just that after a magnificent comeback at Empoli.

Ighli Vannucchi, Davide and Luca Saudati gave Empoli a 3-0 lead inside 23 minutes. But Luca Vigiani began the revival after the break and then two goals including a penalty from Nicola Amoruso completed the comeback.

The draw represented a major setback to Empoli`s hopes of qualifying for next season`s UEFA Cup. The Tuscany club have been the surprise package in Italy this season but they now find themselves in seventh place, a point shy of Palermo and Fiorentina.

The Viola were also held on Sunday, 2-2 at Messina, two late Christian Rigano goals, one from the spot, cancelling out a Giampaolo Pazzini penalty and an Alessandro Gamberini strike.

The other team still embroiled in the relegation scrap, Parma, earned a creditable goalless draw at Lazio.

Claudio Ranieri has masterminded Parma`s recent resurgence but, despite his best efforts, the Gialloblu still find themselves in trouble, two points ahead of Siena. On the final day, Parma host Empoli, Reggina take on AC Milan and Siena entertain Lazio.

Cagliari need not worry for their Serie A status anymore after a 3-2 defeat of Roma. David Suazo fired them into an early lead, but the Giallorossi, who were crowned Coppa Italia winners on Thursday, hit back courtesy of a Francesco Totti penalty.

But on-loan Davide Marchini had the final say, scoring in the 39th and 67th minutes at the Stadio San Elia, before Totti grabbed his 200th career goal late on to take his tally to 24 for the season - next week he looks certain to be crowned "capocannoniere" (Serie A top scorer).

A point was also enough to mean safety for both Torino and Livorno after they shared the spoils in a tense goalless draw.

Champions Internazionale drew 1-1 at Atalanta. Adriano put the home side ahead but Luis Figo levelled from the spot three minutes into the second half.

                              • Chievo's fairytale stay in Serie A came to an end on Sunday when it was relegated after losing its final match of the season to fellow strugglers Catania, 2-0.

That result, in a match played on neutral soil in Bologna, condemned the Verona-based squad to Serie B, where it joined the already doomed Ascoli and Messina.

Five clubs had all been in contention to fill the last relegation spot on the last day but, while Chievo lost, the other four - Reggina, Siena, Catania and Parma - all won. Reggina beat AC Milan, 2-0, in a match where the European champions fielded a limited squad, Siena surprised Lazio, 2-1, while Parma dispatched Empoli with a 3-1 victory.

Chievo, long considered Verona's second club and representing a tiny hamlet on the edge of the historic city, was promoted to Serie A in 2001 for the first time and even topped the top league for six weeks in its first season.

It was given the unofficial nickname of the "Flying Donkeys" by having been promoted against all odds. The name came from a song rival Verona fans had once sung belittling their neighbors whom they said would only play in Serie A when donkeys could fly.

Chievo had defied predictions of relegation ever since but on Sunday its luck finally ran out.

Bologna was the scene with Catania's ban on playing at home still in force but Fausto Rossini opened the scoring for the Sicilians after 66 minutes.

It looked as Chievo might still survive when news arrived that Lazio tied its match against Siena. But after Catania had added a second goal through substitute Mauro Minelli, the word came through that Siena had scored a second goal and Chievo fell through the trapdoor.

It was former Lazio player Paolo Negro who proved the savior for Siena with his late goal for the Tuscany club. Siena had taken the lead through a penalty goal by Massimo Maccarone in the 23rd minute only before Tommaso Rocchi equalized, also from the spot.

Reggina did the job against a Milan team whose coach, Carlo Ancelotti, rested several heroes of its Champions League win on Wednesday.

While Chievo may feel hard done by the face that the Rossoneri fielded such a weak team, Reggina, deducted 11 points for match-fixing, will feel it deserved it top-flight spot.

Nicola Amoruso and substitute Daniele Amerini supplied the goals for the Calabrians. Parma quickly soothed its nerves with early strikes from Zlatan Muslimovic and Igor Budan.

Luca Saudati pulled one back for Empoli but Andrea Gasbarroni sealed the win - and saved the season - for Claudio Ranieri's side three minutes from time.

Elsewhere, two goals by Francesco Totti took his seasonal tally to 26 and ensured he was crowned Italy's "capocannoniere" (top scorer) as Roma ended with a 4-3 win over already-relegated Messina.

Alessandro Mancini and substitute Aleandro Rosi scored the other goals for the Eternal City club with Christian Rigano scoring twice and substitute Nicolas Cordova once for Messina.

Fiorentina signed off with a 5-1 thrashing of Sampdoria and finish sixth despite a 15-point deduction.

Adrian Mutu started the rout and there were further goals from Riccardo Montolivo, Giampaolo Pazzini and Reginaldo (two) with Fabio Quagliarella on the mark for Samp.

Champions Inter ended their season with a 3-0 win over Torino with Marco Materazzi's penalty followed by goals from Maicon and Luis Figo, who also netted from the spot in probably his last game for the Nerazzurri.

Relegated Ascoli had a winning end to a poor campaign when they beat Cagliari, 2-1.

Youngster Marco Mancosu put the Sardinian visitors ahead but Andrea Soncin and Michele Paolucci struck for the hosts in a game where Stefano Lombardi of Ascoli and Jose Vitor Semedo of Cagliari were both red carded.

Cristiano Lucarelli scored two goals in what was probably his last game for Livorno, which ended the campaign with a 4-2 win over Atalanta.

Stefano Morrone and Paulinho were also on target for the Tuscany-based club while Riccardo Zampagna and substitute Davide Bombardini netted the goals for the visitors from Bergamo, who ended an impressive season on a losing note.

Andrea Carraciolo and Eugenio Corini were the marksmen for Palermo in a 2-1 win over Udinese, whose goal was scored by Tomas Sivok. Palermo finish fifth.
