Inter Milan marched 11 points clear at the top of Serie A when they beat Fiorentina 3-1 at the San Siro on Sunday.

Trailing to an early header by visiting striker Luca Toni, Inter hit back with goals from Dejan Stankovic, Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to move up to 54 points from 20 matches and rack up a record-breaking 13th successive win in the division.

Second-placed AS Roma lost more ground on Inter as captain Francesco Totti was sent off in a 1-1 draw at Livorno. Palermo, in third place on 39 points, also drew, 0-0 with Reggina on Saturday.

Empoli climbed to fourth on 28 points after beating Sampdoria 2-0, but AC Milan's rapid rise up the standings after winning their last three matches was halted at Rome's Olympic stadium where they were outplayed in a 0-0 draw with Lazio.

Inter, who are unbeaten in Serie A this season, were caught cold in the fifth minute when Fabio Liverani swung a free kick in from the left and Toni muscled in front of his marker to head in from close range.

Two goals in five minutes, however, put the league leaders back in control.

Brazilian striker Adriano was crucial to both of them, first providing the layoff for Stankovic to sidefoot the ball powerfully past visiting keeper Sebastien Frey, then curling a low free kick round the wall to give Inter the lead after 24 minutes.

Fiorentina ended the first half in attack and came out aggressively after the break, but were punished by an opportunistic piece of finishing by Ibrahimovic midway through the second half.

Stankovic swung a free kick into the area, Frey palmed away the Swedish international's initial header, but could not prevent him pouncing on the rebound to make sure of the points for Inter.

"Whether it is a nine or an 11-point advantage makes no difference. There were more important things about today's win against a very determined Fiorentina side," Inter coach Roberto Mancini said.

"We conceded Toni's goal because of a lapse in concentration, but reacted well to that situation, and that's what makes me happy."

Roma, meanwhile, travelled to Livorno knowing they could ill afford a repeat of last weekend's performance, when they conceded a stoppage-time penalty in a 2-2 draw at Messina.

A needless foul, however, again let them down, when Philippe Mexes tugged on Cristiano Lucarelli's shirt to give away a 22nd-minute penalty, which Lucarelli converted.

Francesco Totti's 74th-minute equaliser rewarded a bright second half performance.

The goal -- Totti's 138th in Serie A -- made the Roma captain the most prolific scorer currently playing in Serie A alongside Siena striker Enrico Chiesa.

But he made a premature exit in stoppage time, when he kicked out at Livorno defender Fabio Galante to earn a straight red card.

Lazio climbed to fourth in Serie A after striker Tommaso Rocchi scored twice in a 3-0 victory at Palermo on Saturday.

Rocchi was on target in the first half and with a 79th-minute penalty as Lazio took their tally to 30 points from 21 games, 24 behind leaders Inter Milan who visit Sampdoria on Sunday.

Defender Sebastiano Siviglia also netted early in the second half.

Palermo, third on 39 points, had only let in three league goals at the Barbera stadium since mid-October but both sides went close to conceding in a lively opening half hour.

Home keeper Alberto Fontana denied Rocchi while, at the other end, former Italy international Angelo Peruzzi tipped David Michele's shot over the bar at full stretch.

Rocchi put the visitors ahead after 44 minutes, running on to Gabyi Mudingayi's cut-back and rolling the ball over the line at the second attempt after Fontana parried his initial shot.

Mark Bresciano almost pulled the Sicilians level at the restart when he nodded narrowly wide.

Lazio, however, took control when Siviglia headed in a 52nd-minute free kick.

                LATE GOALS

Rocchi thumped in the third goal after Palermo captain Eugenio Corini barged Ayodele Makinwa to the ground.

Earlier, Udinese conceded two late goals but held on to beat Torino 3-2 and rise to fifth on 29 points.

Midfielder Christian Obodo and strikers Paulo Barreto and Asamoah Gyan put Udinese 3-0 up.

Elvis Abbruscato's 77th-minute strike for Torino seemed no more than a consolation, especially when team mate Gabriele Cioffi was sent off soon after.

Abbruscato, though, struck again in stoppage time to ensure a nervy finale.

In Serie B, former European Player of the Year Pavel Nedved struck late to give leaders Juventus a 1-1 draw at Spezia.

Trailing to a goal by Simone Confalone and reduced to 10 men when Giuliano Giannichedda was sent off 13 minutes from the end, Juventus were heading for only their second league defeat of the season until Nedved scored with a right-foot drive in stoppage time.

Juve have 39 points, two more than Bologna who beat Albinoleffe 1-0.

Internazionale maintained its 11-point lead at the top of Serie A after extending its winning streak to 14 matches with a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday evening.

Four days after winning, 3-0, at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in the Coppa Italia semifinal, Roberto Mancini's side earned three more league points to take a step closer to the title.

Playing with only 10 men following the seventh-minute dismissal of Gennaro Delvecchio, Samp put up a brave fight before succumbing to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic header in the 38th minute.

Maicon then sealed the win in the 75th minute.

Earlier in the day, second-placed Roma had briefly cut Inter's lead to eight points with a narrow 1-0 victory over 10-man Siena at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mirko Vucinic struck his first goal of the season on the hour mark to ensure the Giallorossi returned to winning ways after two consecutive draws.

Siena striker Thomas Locatelli was sent off in the last minute for an elbow on Daniele De Rossi.

Catania failed to leapfrog Lazio into fourth place after being held to a 1-1 draw at Atalanta.

Japanese striker Takayuki Morimoto scored his first-ever Serie A goal two minutes from time to salvage a vital point for Pasquale Marino's European hopefuls after Riccardo Zampagna had given Atalanta a first-half lead.

Substitute Filippo Inzaghi came to the rescue with a second-half goal to give AC Milan a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Parma.

Empoli's somewhat surprising European aspirations are still intact after they held struggling Chievo to a goalless draw at the Stadio Marc Antonio Bentegodi.

On-loan striker Michele Paolucci scored twice at the death as 10-man Ascoli came from behind to secure their first away victory of the season, 2-1, at relegation rivals Messina.

A 77th-minute penalty from Alessandro Parisi looked to have put the Giallorossi on course for their first Serie A victory in 12 matches, but Paolucci headed a 90th-minute equalizer for the bottom of the table side before snatching a 94th-minute winner after Luigi Di Biagio had been sent off.

Luca Vigiani scored both goals to lift Reggina out of the drop zone with a 2-0 victory at Cagliari, while Fiorentina came from behind to seal a 2-1 victory against Livorno at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Cristiano Lucarelli opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, but Luca Toni and Martin Jorgensen struck for La Viola to leave Livorno without a Serie A win in nine games.

Two goals from Tommaso Rocchi and a Sebastiano Siviglia strike gave Lazio a convincing 3-0 win at Palermo on Saturday evening.

In the only other top-flight game on Saturday, 10-man Torino were beaten, 3-2, by Udinese at the Olympic Stadium, with Christian Obodo, Paulo Barreto and Gyan Asamoah on target for the visitors.

Elvis Abbruscato netted twice in the last 13 minutes for Torino, who had Gabriele Cioffi sent off.

Inter Milan maintained their 11-point cushion at the top of Serie A when they beat Sampdoria 2-0 on Sunday.

A goal in each half by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Douglas Maicon gave Inter an easy win over Sampdoria, who played with 10 men for most of the match following the seventh-minute sending off of midfielder Gennaro Delvecchio.

Inter, who extended their record winning streak to 14 league matches, have 57 points. AS Roma lie second on 46 points after Serbian striker Mirko Vucinic scored for a 1-0 victory over Siena.

Palermo lie third on 39 points despite losing 3-0 to Lazio on Saturday.

Catania drew level with Lazio in fourth on 30 points after their 18-year-old Japanese striker Takayuki Marimoto crowned his Serie A debut by grabbing a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw away to Atalanta.

AC Milan notched up their fourth win in five games when Filippo Inzaghi scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Parma.

                    MATERAZZI HEADBUTTED

Sampdoria were one of only three sides of take points off Inter in Serie A this season in a 1-1 draw at the San Siro in September.

But after losing 3-0 to a second-string Inter side in the Italian Cup in midweek, few expected the Genoa-based side to prevent Inter from extending their record winning run.

Delvecchio immediately put them at a disadvantage, getting into an argument with Marco Materazzi then following the example shown by Zinedine Zidane in last year's World Cup final by headbutting the Inter defender to earn a straight red card and leave his side a man short after just seven minutes.

His team mates soldiered on, but gradually the visitors took control.

Adriano put the ball in the back of the net from a fractionally offside position, and Sampdoria keeper Luca Castellazzi dived to stop an Ibrahimovic free kick creeping in at the base of his post.

Castellazzi was left rooted to the spot, however, in the 38th minute when Ibrahimovic headed Maicon's cross into the top corner.

Inter tightened their grip in the second half and made sure of the points in the 75th minute when Ibrahimovic caught defender Luigi Sala in possession and slid the ball across the area for Maicon to fire into the roof of the net.

                    VUCINIC FIRST

Roma, who were without suspended captain Francesco Totti, had drawn their last two games against Messina and Livorno and desperately needed a win to keep a rein on Inter.

Vucinic struck just past the hour when he ran on to Francesco Tavano's defence-splitting pass and beat keeper Alex Manninger at the near post for his first goal in Serie A.

Siena had Tomas Locatelli sent off in stoppage time for elbowing Daniele De Rossi in the face.

After a week of excitement surrounding the imminent arrival of Brazilian striker Ronaldo, Milan came down to earth with a bump as they struggled to beat relegation-threatened Parma.

The six-times European champions dominated but failed to capitalise on a string of chances until the 76th minute, when an Andrea Pirlo free kick bounced through a crowded area to Inzaghi, who pulled the ball down and fired in from close range.

Milan are ninth, but with just three points separating them from Lazio and Catania they are closing in on a place in next season's Champions League.

                    • A police officer was killed Friday when fans rioted at a Serie A game between Sicilian sides Catania and Palermo, prompting the Italian soccer federation to postpone all league matches this weekend and cancel next week's national team exhibition game against Romania.

Fans rioted outside Catania's Angelo Massimino Stadium during the second half of Palermo's 2-1 win. Police fired tear gas, which wafted into the stadium and forced the match to be stopped in the 58th minute with Palermo leading 1-0. Television footage from Sky TG24 News showed players struggling to breathe and pouring bottled water on their faces.

Police said the officer died after an explosive device was thrown inside his vehicle. The violence continued after the game, and hundreds of fans were trapped inside the stadium as authorities sought to avoid further violence. The ANSA news agency reported that nine fans had been detained, but none was suspected of killing the officer.

The governing body of Italian soccer, Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, said another police officer was in critical condition, and police said dozens of injured people had been taken to hospitals.

FIGC commissioner Luca Pancalli announced weekend league games had been called off.

"We cannot continue like this," he said. "What we're witnessing has nothing to do with soccer, therefore Italian soccer is stopping."

He said there would be more meetings Monday "to identify those drastic measures that will allow us to restart. Otherwise, we're not restarting the games."

"I feel it is my duty to say that we unfortunately need a loud and clear signal to avoid the degeneration of the sport that we, unfortunately and dramatically, are witnessing," Prime Minister Romano Prodi was quoted as saying by Italian news agencies.

The FIGC canceled the national team's exhibition on Wednesday in Siena and called off the Under-21 team's game Tuesday against Belgium in Chieti.

                            • Police arrested 29 people following rioting at a Serie A match in which a police officer died, and preliminary autopsy results showed the officer might not have been killed by an explosive device as believed.

The Italian Olympic Committee has made a series of recommendations, including banning stadiums where security is inadequate from hosting games next season.

The 38-year-old police officer, Filippo Raciti, died late Friday in the violence that followed a match between Catania and Palermo in the city of Catania in Sicily.

The rioting outside Catania's Angelo Massimino stadium started during the second half. Police fired tear gas, which wafted into the stadium and forced the match to be temporarily suspended.

The violence continued after the game, in which Palermo beat Catania 2-1, trapping hundreds of fans inside the stadium as authorities sought to avoid further violence. About 100 people were injured.

Renato Papa, a prosecutor in Catania, said on Sunday that investigators had discovered the remains of crude bombs as well as arms and drugs, and that seven more people had been arrested to total 29.

Papa also said that Raciti died from severe injuries to his liver, leading investigators to believe he was not killed by a crude bomb that was tossed into his car, but was likely hit by a blunt object.

The prosecutor accused Catania fans of ambushing police.

"These actions took place when the game was over and the Palermo fans were no longer there," Papa said. "The ambush was not against Palermo fans -- it was against police officers."

It was the second recent soccer-related death. A fourth-division team manager died on Jan. 27 from injuries he received when he tried to stop a brawl during a game.

Friday's rioting has left politicians unsure how to confront violence in soccer stadiums. Many have called for zero-tolerance measures, while others look to Britain -- a country that has largely solved its hooliganism -- for possible solutions.

The Italian soccer federation has canceled all games over the weekend, Wednesday's exhibition between Italy and Romania, and has threatened to extend the suspension.

                              • Soccer fans won't be allowed into stadiums in Italy unless security measures are met, a decision that comes days after rioting at a game in Sicily in which a police officer was killed.

Interior Minister Giuliano Amato also said Monday that clubs will not be able to sell blocks of tickets to visiting fans, allowing for better control of those entering stadiums. These decisions and others need to be approved at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Amato added.

"I know it is extravagant to think of soccer play without the public," he said. "But I think it is a worse extravagance to have someone die for something like that."

Luca Pancalli, the Italian soccer federation commissioner, said the decision on resuming professional play would be made after the Cabinet meeting. He said that would give the league enough time to schedule games for next weekend.

Games in the country's top league, scheduled for last Saturday and Sunday, were called off because of Friday's riot after Palermo beat host Catania 2-1.

The Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport reported Monday that only four stadiums used by clubs in the Serie A satisfy the safety norms -- the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, the Artemio Franchi stadium in Siena, and the Renzo Barbera stadium in Palermo. San Siro, the stadium shared by AC Milan and Inter Milan, does not meet the criteria.

Sports minister Giovanna Melandri also said soccer clubs must cut ties to fan clubs and opponents should be regarded as "adversaries, not enemies."

In the Sicilian city of Catania, thousands of mourners flocked to a cathedral for the funeral of the slain police officer. Pope Benedict XVI expressed his "spiritual closeness" to the family of 38-year-old Filippo Raciti.

"In reiterating his firm condemnation for any act of violence that stains the world of soccer, the Holy Father urges protagonists to promote respect for legality with greater determination," the pope said in a telegram of condolences that was read during the funeral.

In a sign of respect, people applauded as Raciti's coffin, draped in the Italian flag, was carried inside the Duomo Cathedral followed by his youngest son dressed in a police uniform.

"I only hope that your death will push society to make changes," Raciti's teenage daughter, Fabiana, said during a tearful speech.

Amato has said the violence must stop, or the games will. But officials will also have to consider the economic impact of not allowing a quick return to play.

AC Milan and Juventus are the world's third- and fourth-biggest clubs by revenue, according to accounting firm Deloitte. During the 2004-05 season, along with rival giants Inter Milan and AS Roma, the clubs generated more than $1 billion through game-day receipts, broadcast deals, sponsorships and merchandising.

"This is among Italy's most important industries, and it needs to continue," Antonio Matarrese, the president of the Italian soccer league, said in Monday's editions of La Repubblica. "We are saddened, but the show must go on."

"Unfortunately, deaths ... are part of this huge movement, which law enforcement officials still can't control," he said.

Matarrese's comments drew immediate criticism, with the Italian Olympic Committee calling them "seriously offensive." Matarrese later said he had been misunderstood and had not intended to sound as if he was taking the violence lightly.

"Those that have done wrong must be punished," AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini said. "But playing with the doors closed would be the death of soccer."

Associated Press Writers Ariel David in Rome and Andrew Roberts in Milan contributed to this report.
