                CAGLIARI 2 AC MILAN 2

Italy international striker Alberto Gilardino headed in a
cross from French midfielder Yoann Gourcuff to put Milan ahead
in the 48th minute but Cagliari equalised when their Honduran
striker David Suazo was fouled by Kakha Kaladze and slotted home
                the penalty.

Suazo had a big role in Cagliari's second -- his attempted
lob was superbly saved by Milan's Australian keeper Zeljko Kalac
but Andrea Capone was there to nod in the loose ball.

Marco Borriello's classy finish brought Milan back on level
terms in the 70th minute. Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo was sent
off five minutes later as Carlo Ancelotti's side had to settle
                for a point.

                FIORENTINA 1 LAZIO 0

A few years ago this would have been a top of the table game
but with both club starting the season with penalty points from
the match-fixing tribunal the match had a very different feel.

A superb volley from Italy striker Luca Toni in the 15th
minute decided the match. Fiorentina's French keeper Sebastian
Frey later produced an outstanding save to keep out an effort
from Lazio's Nigerian forward Stephen Makinwa.

                LIVORNO 0 CHIEVO VERONA 2

Nigerian striker Victor Obinna hit both goals for Chievo --
the first after he took advantage of some sloopy defending from
Antonio Filippini and the second, a nice lob after some dreadful
                defensive play from Livorno.

The result, Chievo's second successive victory after their
winless start to the campaign, ends Livorno's unbeaten home
                record this season.

                MESSINA 0 SAMPDORIA 2

A first away win of the season for Sampdoria who took the
lead in the 20th minute when Daniele Franceschini headed in a
near post glance from a corner.

After Messina's Christian Rigano had an effort disallowed
for offside, Samp made sure of the three points with an injury
                time tap-in from Fabio Quagliarella.

                - - - -

                PARMA 0 PALERMO 0

A third game without a win for Palermo who now slip eight
points behind leaders Inter. Parma had slightly the better of a
disappointing game with Portuguese defender Fernando Couto
having a second half effort disallowed for offside.

                - - - -

                TORINO 1 EMPOLI 0

Toro's third straight win, on the day they celebrated their
centenary, brought an end to Empoli's seven match unbeaten run.
The visitors felt they should have had a goal when a Francesco
Marianini header appeared to cross the line before Simone Barone
cleared and then two minutes from the end Gianluca Comotto
grabbed the winner with a fierce left foot drive.

                - - - -

                UDINESE 1 REGGINA 1

Goal line cameras were in effect for this game as part of a
FIFA endorsed experiment but there was no incident to test the
use of the technology. Roland Bianchi put the Calabrians ahead
with a 35th minute header but shortly after the break they had
Maurizio Lanzaro sent off for a second booking. Udinese
equalised through a familiar source -- Antonio Di Natale setting
up Vincenzo Iaquinta who slipped the ball through the legs of
                Reggina keeper Ivan Pelizzoli.

                ASCOLI 2 CATANIA 2

Striker Gionatha Spinesi was unmarked when he headed home a
cross from the middle of the box in the 80th minute to salvage a
point for Catania, who were two down at halftime.

Sasa Bjelanovic scored both goals for Ascoli. His first in
the 12th minute was lucky to be awarded as the Croatian looked
offside when he struck one metre from the line, while his second
was a fine header from Mirko Cudini's cross in the 39th.

Lorenzo Stovini brought the visitors back into the game
eight minutes into the second half when he tapped home in a
                goalmouth scramble following a corner.

                Played on Saturday:

                INTER MILAN 2 SIENA 0

Siena were outclassed by leaders Inter at the San Siro with
both goals coming from Argentines. Defender Nicolas Burdisso
headed home an 11th minute corner and then Swede Zlatan
Ibrahimovic slipped through Hernan Crespo and he jinked round a
defender before chipping the ball coolly over Siena's Austrian
keeper Alex Manninger in the 54th minute.

                - - - -

                AS ROMA 2 ATALANTA 1

Riccardo Zampagna put Atalanta in front in the 19th, firing
in the loose ball after Roma keeper Doni had blocked a Massimo
                Donati shot.

Both Roma's goals came from penalties from skipper Francesco
Totti -- Simone Loria tripped Simone Perrotta and Totti
converted and then the Italy international himself was upended
by Giulio Migliaccio 12 minutes later and rose to score his
                ninth goal of the season.

Atalanta's Massimo Donati was sent off late on for a second
                bookable offence.

AC Milan chief Adriano Galliani ruled out a January transfer return for under-achieving Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko.

Shevchenko, still regarded as a legend at the Milan club, has failed to produce the same kind of form for the English champions, sparking rumours that he would be ready to return to Italy.

However Galliani said the club would not take him back as it was the Ukrainian's wish to leave in the first place, and because they "already have four strikers and Kaka".

"Shevchenko was sold because it was his decision to leave. And, it's not conceivable that Chelsea, after investing so much (45 million euros), would let him go after just six months," said Galliani.

"It's just not possible, it's unimaginable."

Shevchenko helped AC Milan win the Champions League final in 2003 when he scored the winning spot-kick in an Old Trafford penalty shoot-out against Juventus.

Since his move to England, however, the goalscoring touch of 'Sheva' appears to have dried up.

AC Milan, hit with a points sanction for their role last season in a match-fixing scandal, are in desperate need of a goalscorer but Shevchenko has appeared to commit himself to Chelsea's cause.

Galliani said the only player the club may sign in the January transfer window is a defender.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder also ruled out a loan move for Shevchenko.

With Michael Owen still out injured, Newcastle are struggling in attack and the Ukrainian is one of a host of players linked with a move to the Magpies.

Roeder said: "Shevchenko is a wonderful player and a player any club would love to have. But I have not contacted Chelsea about him and I will not be contacting them.

"I am afraid some of the transfer talk over the weekend is pure fantasy."

Fabio Simplicio scored twice as Palermo closed the gap on second-placed Roma to just one point with a comfortable 3-0 home victory against Livorno in Serie A play.

Brazilian midfielder Simplicio opened the scoring with a deflected second-minute strike, before countryman and leading scorer Carvalho Amauri doubled the hosts' advantage nine minutes before half-time with a powerful header.

Simplicio put the icing on the cake with his second goal, a powerful right-foot 11 minutes from time to give the Sicilian giants their first win in four Serie A matches.

Livorno missed an opportunity to move into fourth-place in the table and stretched its winless run in Serie A to three games.

The Rosaneri dominated from start to finish and had the best possible start when striker David Di Michele picked up a pass from Roberto Guana and fired in a shot which was deflected in by Simplicio.

Livorno responded and almost drew level when midfielder Dario Passoni's dangerous free kick flashed across the face of Alberto Fontana's goal.

Palermo continued to ask questions of the visitors' defence and Cristian Zaccardo could have extended their lead if his towering header had gone a yard either side of Livorno goalkeeper Marco Amelia, who made a comfortable save.

The Tuscan outfit had another opportunity to get back on level terms when they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, but although Giovanni Pasquale managed to beat the wall with his set-piece, Fontana made a comfortable save.

Live-wire striker Di Michele was once again involved in Palermo's second goal, feeding Mark Bresciano, who whipped in a pinpoint cross that the impressive Brazilian striker Amauri powerfully headed into the back of the net.

Livorno pressed forward early in the opening exchanges of the second half, but failed to break down a stubborn Palermo defense.

Francesco Guidolin's side seemed content to soak up the pressure and hit the visitors on the break, and Amelia had to be alert to race off his line and cut out a dangerous through ball from Bresciano with Di Michele ready to pounce.

The lively Amauri almost brought the home crowd to its feet with a spectacular bicycle kick which was kept out by the agile Amelia with just over 20 minutes remaining.

But Amelia was helpless to prevent Palermo's third goal after 79 minutes when Simplicio hammered Marco Pisano's right-foot centre into the roof of the net.

To Livorno's credit, it continued to push forward in search of a consolation goal and top scorer Cristiano Lucarelli was almost on the scoresheet with a cheeky lob three minutes from time, but Fontana's blushes were spared when he scrambled back to tip the ball wide of the post.

Second-bottom Ascoli remained the only winless team in Serie A after a 2-1 reverse at cellar dwellers Reggina, whose position below Nedo Sonetti's club is due only to a 15-point deduction for match-fixing.

Goals from Alessandro Lucarelli and Nicola Amoruso sealed the win for Reggina, as Marco Pecorari's late strike proved in vain for Ascoli in the basement battle.

Both clubs will face a monumental fight to stay up in the new year, but Reggina would have gone into the top six with this win had it not been for the past misdeeds that led to their punishment.

Ascoli started well enough and after 15 minutes it could have taken the lead at the Stadio Oreste Granillo had Paolo Zanetti kept his shot down after collecting a free kick from Gaetano Fontana.

Rolando Bianchi has been in excellent form for Reggina this season with his eight goals, putting him in the leading group of scorers.

He almost made it nine after 26 minutes when he headed wide after good approach play from Julio Cesar Leon and Daniele Amerini.

However, the home fans did not have to wait long for their team to take charge of the match.

Leon was again involved three minutes later when he sent in a free kick and Lucarelli showed the goal-scoring qualities more associated with his brother Cristiano, the Livorno player, as he headed home at the far post.

A clanger from Mirko Cudini then almost allowed Reggina to double their lead.

He lost the ball to Giacomo Tedesco, who took a snap shot but watched it graze the post of the goal defended by former Italy goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca.

Pagliuca had to dash off his line two minutes later to save at the feet of Lucarelli, who had been played in by another clever pass from Tedesco.

The second half saw Reggina continue to play with the resolve of a side that knows it will have to have an excellent season if it is to stay in the division.

Just after the hour mark they threatened again with the impressive Leon showing the good and the bad side of his game.

The Honduran launched on a solo run and advanced some 40 meters but then failed to pass and instead spurned the opportunity.

Bianchi showed there is more to his game than scoring goals 14 minutes from time as he set up the second.

He launched a Reggina counter-attack and then fed experienced striker Amoruso, who still had plenty of work to do but beat two men before dispatching the ball past Pagliuca.

Ascoli did their best to get back into the game and halved the deficit minutes later.

Gaetano Vastola played in a low cross which Pecorari met with a left-footed volley to reduce arrears.

They could not find an equalizer, though, and Reggina could now be one week away from climbing off the bottom of the table.

ROME, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Inter Milan beat Empoli 3-0 on Sunday to notch up a record-equalling eighth league win in a row and open a seven-point lead in Serie A.

Second-half goals from Hernan Crespo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Walter Samuel helped Inter equal a club record winning run dating back to the 1939-40 season.

Inter have 39 points from 15 matches, seven points more than second-placed AS Roma, whose title bid suffered a setback when they lost 3-0 to city rivals Lazio at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

Palermo, a point further back in third, beat Livorno 3-0 at home while Catania overcame Udinese 1-0 to climb to fourth on 23 points.

AC Milan, who started the season with eight points deducted for their part in a match-fixing scandal, remain mired near the foot of the division after Alberto Gilardino missed a penalty in a 0-0 draw with Torino.

Inter lacked their usual fluency in the first half at Empoli's Castellani stadium.

The closest they came to taking the lead before the interval was when a short clearance from a free kick fell kindly for Santiago Solari to thump the ball into the side-netting.

In the 60th minute, however, Ibrahimovic headed a free kick off the bar and Crespo reacted quickly to turn the rebound into the roof of the net.

                      'GREAT TEAM'

As Empoli pushed forward for an equaliser, they left themselves exposed at the back, opening up the space for Ibrahimovic to run at goal and curl Inter's second goal in off the post.

Defender Samuel wrapped up the result three minutes from time when he headed in a Nicolas Burdisso cross.

"We played an excellent match today," said Inter coach Roberto Mancini, who identified his team's 4-3 win over Milan at the end of October as the result that gave his players the self-belief to extend their winning run.

"After winning the derby we were aware of what we were capable of if we stayed focused," he said.

"Empoli were a tough side, but we only risked conceding a goal once. That's the mark of a great team."

A good day for Inter was capped by the defeat of their nearest rivals Roma.

Roma seemed well in control of the derby until a minute before halftime, when midfielder Cristian Ledesma unleashed a superb rising drive from well outside the area that flew into the top corner of the net.

Lazio extended their lead shortly after the restart. Goran Pandev went through alone on goal only to be upended by Doni to give away a penalty, which Massimo Oddo converted.

                      BACKS EXPOSED

Roma committed men forward in an attempt to pull a goal back. Their tactics, however, left them exposed at the back, and in the 73rd minute Lazio striker Tommaso Rocchi broke forward and played Stefano Mauri into the area.

The Italian international's shot hit the bar, but his midfield companion Mutarelli was well-placed to volley in the rebound.

While Inter go from strength to strength, there seems no end to Milan's disappointing form. The Serie A giants lie 15th in the 20-team division with 13 points.

After watching his players lose 2-0 to Lille in the Champions League in midweek, coach Carlo Ancelotti had asked for an "immediate reaction" against Torino.

Instead, it was another listless performance by Milan, who appeared to have saved themselves in the 77th minute when visiting defender Gabriele Cioffi tripped Gilardino to give away a penalty.

The Italy striker's spot kick struck the post, however, and Milan were lucky to come away with a point after Torino striker Roberto Muzzi twice hit the woodwork in the closing stages.

The season may only be half over but the chase for the Serie A title looks now to be a two-horse race between Internazionale and Roma.

Internazionale beat Messina 2-0 to record their ninth consecutive win and briefly establish a 10-point lead.

Roma later trimmed that to seven points by beating third-placed Palermo 4-0 and the challenge of the plucky Sicilian club looks to be almost over.

In Milan, second-half goals from Marco Materazzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned the points for Inter. In Rome, Alessandro Mancini netted twice, Francesco Totti once, from the penalty spot, while the final goal was an own goal by Giuseppe Biava.

Palermo's Fabio Simplicio was sent off. Fourth-placed Catania had their home game with Empoli postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. Ascoli continue to search for that elusive first win of the season after slumping to their 10th defeat in 16 Serie A matches, 2-0 at the hands of Torino.

Two goals from Alessandro Rosina, the first coming from the penalty spot, earned the visitors the spoils in an eventful clash at the Stadio Del Duca.

Michelangelo Minieri saw red for Ascoli midway through the second half, while Sasa Bjelanovic missed a spot-kick for the hosts in the closing minutes.

Mario Frick's late equaliser for Siena against Atalanta ensured honours ended even in an encounter between two teams that have exceeded expectations so far this season. Giulio Migliaccio had given the Bergamaschi the upper hand nine minutes before half-time before Frick's late intervention secured the hosts a 1-1 draw.

Neither Siena coach Mario Beretta nor defender Daniele Portanova saw the end of the match as both were dismissed in the dying minutes by referee Orsato di Schio, who was making his Serie A debut.

Parma and Chievo shared the spoils in a battle of clubs fighting relegation. Andrea Zanchetta opened proceedings for Chievo with a 23rd minute penalty, only for the home fans to rise to their feet shortly after following Igor Budan's equaliser.

Parma then took the lead with Daniele Dessena's 58th-minute strike, but Lorenzo D'Anna pulled the visitors level to 2-2.

Lazio had a man sent off but escaped with a 1-1 draw at Livorno on Sunday. The Eternal City club, fresh off their 3-0 triumph over bitter rivals Roma, were hoping to move into the top four and took a 25th-minute lead thanks to Goran Pandev.

But Livorno striker Cristiano Lucarelli equalised shortly after the half-hour mark and the the teams shared the spoils.

The game took a turn for the worst for the visitors when Lazio forward Tommaso Rocchi was given his marching orders after he was shown his second yellow card for a late tackle on Antonio Filippini with 60 minutes played.

A stunning overhead kick from Fabio Quagliarella handed Sampdoria the points in a narrow 1-0 win at Reggina.

On Saturday, Alberto Gilardino rescued a 2-2 draw for AC Milan in their crunch match with Fiorentina. In a clash between clubs struggling in the wake of their punishments for match-fixing last season, Gilardino had put Milan ahead after just four minutes.

But Adrian Mutu scored in either half - the first a penalty - leaving Milan to rely on Gilardino's late second to take a point from the game.

Udinese survived the half-time sending off of Sulley Muntari to beat Cagliari 3-1. Vincenzo Iaquinta made one for Giampiero Pinzi and scored another before the hosts were reduced to 10 men, but despite being a man down Udinese scored a third through Chris Obodo.

Andre Cocco pulled a goal back for Cagliari, but the Sardinians have still yet to win away from home this season.

The match proved to be last in charge for Cagliari boss Marco Giampaolo, who was sacked on Sunday.

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini returns to former club Lazio on Wednesday as the Serie A leaders look to extend their record nine match winning streak.

Inter's 2-0 win over Messina on Sunday broke the the club record that had lasted since the 1939-40 season and prompted some in the media to compare Mancini with some of Inter's most successful coaches.

The former Sampdoria and Lazio striker has been keen to play down the plaudits though.

"It's an honour to be linked to certain coaches who have made the history of Inter and football, but there's still a long time to go for these things," said Mancini, who has injury worries over Argentine defender Walter Samuel and French midfielder Patrick Vieira.

Inter's latest victory left them seven points clear of AS Roma, who beat third-placed Palermo 4-0 on Sunday.

"The important thing is that we are ahead," said Mancini, "The others will be feeling a bit of pressure but both Roma and Palermo have the ability to compete for the scudetto with us.

"We want to continue on this path. We now have to work towards our next fixtures: before the Christmas break we have two games against Lazio and Atalanta, and they are the most in-form teams at the moment," he said.

Lazio drew 1-1 at Livorno on Sunday but will take on Inter in confident mood after their 3-0 victory over Roma in their derby a week earlier.

The Rome club have risen to fifth in the standings and with AC Milan well out of the running down in 14th place, Lazio will fancy their chances of making a push for a top four spot and a chance at next season's Champions League.

Mancini was part of the Lazio side, then coached by ex-England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, which won the 'scudetto' in 2000 along with his assistant coach Sinisa Mihajlovic and Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic.

Inter's Argentine striker Hernan Crespo is another former Lazio player who will be returning to the Olympic stadium for a fixture which has painful memories for Inter supporters.

In May, 2002, Inter took on Lazio in the capital on the final day of the season on top of the league but a 4-2 defeat allowed Juventus to take the title at the final hurdle.

Second-placed Roma face a tough task away to a Torino side who are unbeaten in five games while Milan will expect victory at home to Catania.

Internazionale demonstrated its Serie A title credentials once more on Wednesday night with an impressive 2-0 win at Lazio, which was secured despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.

Inter's 10th successive league win didn't come easy, however, following another moment of stupidity from temperamental Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

After Esteban Cambiasso had given Inter a 39th-minute lead, Ibrahimovic picked up his second yellow card of the night and a subsequent red by kicking the ball away after being pulled up for offside.

Inter secured the points late on when Marco Materazzi (86) headed home.

A fortuitous goal from captain Francesco Totti put Roma on course for a hard-fought away victory against 10-man Torino, who had defender Ivan Franceschini dismissed for a deliberate handball in the penalty area, although Totti missed from the spot.

But Totti's luck changed eight minutes before half-time when Alessandro Mancini's long-range strike deflected off him and into the net.

Roma doubled their advantage when Mancini (80) found the target, while midfielder Alessandro Rosina (89) pulled a goal back for Torino.

AC Milan registered their first win in four Serie A matches by brushing aside the challenge of high-flying Catania.

The Rossoneri went into the match just three points above the drop zone, but proved too strong for the visitors, eventually winning with ease thanks to goals from Kaka (four and 8 and Alberto Gilardino (82).

Palermo returned to winning ways with a 4-0 hammering of Ascoli.

Mark Bresciano got the Sicilian outfit off to a flying start with a goal on 15 minutes while captain Eugenio Corini (53) doubled the lead with his seventh goal of the season.

Giovanni Tedesco made it three six minutes from full-time before Ciro Capuano sealed the win in injury time.

Chievo pulled off a thrilling victory against Reggina that confirms they are back on form and have every chance of securing another season in top-flight football.

Nicola Amoruso put the visitors from Reggio Calabria ahead after 17 minutes only for Chievo to equalize through Paolo Sammarco nine minutes later.

Just before the interval Federico Cossato put the home team in front but Francesco Modesto (7 levelled the scores for Reggina.

But Simone Tiribocchi (8 struck a late winner for Chievo who have now taken 10 points from a possible 15 to pull away from the relegation zone.

Sampdoria came from behind impressively to demolish Livorno, 4-1, at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Fabio Quagliarella was the Samp hero with two goals (47 and 57), sealing a third win in the last four games for Walter Novellino's side.

Luca Vigiani had given the visitors a 12th-minute lead, but Daniele Franceschini equalized in the 25th minute and a penalty from Francesco Flachi after half-an-hour saw the home side go into the break ahead.

Elsewhere, two goals from Luca Toni (31 and 75) helped Fiorentina stretch their unbeaten run to seven matches in Serie A and marked an unhappy start to Franco Colomba's time in charge of Cagliari, while Messina were held to a 1-1 draw by Parma.

Both goals came in the second half, Arturo Di Napoli (73) handing Bruno Giordano's side the lead, before Stefano Pioli's Gialloblu levelled through Daniele Paponi moments later.

Empoli edged local rivals Siena, Francesco Marianini (47) scoring for Empoli with what would prove to be the only goal.

Finally, 10-man Udinese secured a 2-1 win at Atalanta thanks to Antonio Di Natale's 90th-minute strike.

Fernando Tissone (46) put the home side in the lead early in the second half only for Raffaele De Martino, who would later receive a red card, to equalize for Udinese minutes later.

Internazionale tied a Serie A record with its 11th consecutive win Saturday, working hard to secure a 2-1 victory against a spirited Atalanta side at Rome.
Inter matched the mark established a season ago by AS Roma. The Milan outfit heads into the holidays with a seven-point lead in the standings.
Roberto Mancini's men had to rely on a 75th-minute own goal from Simone Loria at the San Siro to secure their 15th win of an increasingly impressive season.
Earlier, Brazil international Adriano had equalized Cristiano Doni's shocking opener for an Atalanta side who will be happy with their mid-table placing at this stage of the season.
Second-placed Roma maintained the pressure on the Nerazzurri with a 2-0 victory over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico as Rodrigo Taddei and Alessandro Mancini grabbed the goals.
Palermo continued to fall off the pace following a 1-1 draw at Siena. Fabio Simplicio put the Sicilian visitors ahead just before halftime but Leandro Rinaudo equalized a minute later.
Catania's fairy-tale season among the elite of Italian soccer shows no sign of coming to an end following a 4-2 home victory over Sampdoria. Gionatha Spinesi netted a hat trick, with Fabio Caserta also on the scoresheet. Angelo Palombo and Daniele Franceschini grabbed Samp's goals.
Catania is fourth, a position that would see the Sicilian side play in next season's Champions League. It is a point ahead of Lazio, who were 3-1 winners at Parma despite playing for 76 minutes with 10 men following the early dismissal of Sebastiano Siviglia.
Igor Budan put the hosts ahead, but Lazio stormed back with goals from Guglielmo Stendardo, Goran Pandev and Tomasso Rocchi.
AC Milan recorded its second 3-0 win in four days, this one at Udinese. Kaka put the Rossoneri ahead from the spot after 31 minutes and further efforts from Alberto Gilardino and Ricardo Oliveira meant Milan finished a dismal year on a high note.
Fiorentina hammered Messina, 4-0, as Luca Toni, Alessandro Potenza, Fabio Liverani and Adrian Mutu scored. Nicola Amoruso netted twice in Reggina's much-needed 4-1 victory over Empoli.
Rock-bottom Ascoli finally registered its first win of the season with a 3-0 defeat of nine-man Chievo. The visitors from Verona had Victor Obinna and Salvatore Lanna sent off, and Ascoli took full advantage with Michele Paolucci's strike added to by Sasa Bjelanovic's double. Livorno and Torino played out a 1-1 draw in Leghorn.
