Il Divo zooms past Jamie Foxx to claim No. 1

NEW YORK- Il Divo, a pop-opera group assembled by music mogul
and "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. albums chart Wednesday, ending a five-week battle for honors between Mary J. Blige and Jamie Foxx.

Il Divo's "Ancora," one of five new entries in the top 10, sold 156,000 copies in the week ended January 29, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The group appeared on the Billboard 200 twice in 2005, peaking at No. 4 with its self-titled debut and at No. 14 with "The Christmas Collection." The new Syco/Columbia release also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Classical Crossover chart, the group's third trip to the summit.

Country artist Josh Turner's sophomore set, "Your Man," debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 with 102,000 units. The MCA Nashville release also gives Turner his first No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. The set features the single "Your Man," a top 10 track on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.

Foxx's "Unpredictable" fell two places to No. 3 with 100,000 copies. However, the actor's J Records set maintained its lead on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for a fourth week. Blige's "The Breakthrough" (Geffen) fell two places to No. 4 with 98,000 copies.

Florida rock band Yellowcard's "Lights and Sounds" (Capitol) and the hits compilation "NOW #1's" (Universal/EMI/Sony BMG/Zombs/UME) bowed at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, separated by about 700 copies at a rounded figure of 90,000.

"American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" (Arista) fell three places to No. 7 with 74,000 copies. Eminem's "Curtain Call: The Hits" (Interscope) dropped five places to No. 8 with 73,000.

Hard rock outfit P.O.D.'s Atlantic set "Testify" debuted at No. 9 with sales of 58,000 copies, a significant decrease from the opening-week numbers of 2003's "Payable on Death," which shifted 106,000. The soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical" rounded out the top tier, rocketing up 48 places to No. 10 with 53,000 copies in in its third week.

The "2006 Grammy Nominees" compilation (Sony BMG Strategic Marketing Group) opened at No. 14 with 43,000 copies. Other debuts included the Kenny Rogers compilation "21 Number Ones" (Capitol/EMI, No. 24), Cat Power's "The Greatest" (Matador, No. 34) and Marty Casey & Lovehammers' self-titled set (Epic, No. 67). Indie rocker Cat Power, the stage name for Chan Marshall, has never previously been above No. 105 on The Billboard 200, a perch achieved with her 2003 album "You Are Free."

Overall sales were up by 5% over the previous week at 9.5 million but down 5% compared to the same week last year. Sales for 2006 sales were on par with the same period in 2005 at 40.2 million units.

Bono calls on US to increase aid to world's poor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rock star Bono, wearing his trademark tinted glasses, stood before President George W. Bush, members of the U.S. Congress, diplomats and clergy on Thursday and called for the United States to give an extra 1 percent of its budget to the world's poor.

Guests at the National Prayer Breakfast, a high-powered and sedate annual gathering, were transfixed by the frontman from the Irish band U2 and aid-to-Africa activist who professed to be shocked by his own presence at the event.

"Please join me in praying I don't say something we all regret," he began. "If you're wondering what I'm doing at the prayer breakfast, so am I."

He said there was only one possible explanation.

"I've got a messianic complex."

Bono confessed to having avoided organized religion for most of his life and said he was not a man of the cloth unless, as he quipped, "that cloth is leather."

After launching into a kind of informal sermon about "the laws of man" and "higher laws," Bono likened economic relief to that of religious sacrificial giving.

"People of faith, people of America," he said, "I want to suggest to you today that you see the flow of effective foreign assistance as tithing, which to be truly meaningful will mean an additional 1 percent of the federal budget tithed to the poor."

One percent of last year's overall budget of $2.6 trillion would be about $26 billion. But in reality Congress and the Bush administration control significantly less than half of the overall budget because most is consumed by mandatory programs.

"Where you live should no longer determine whether you live," he said. He thanked Americans for doubling aid to Africa and tripling aid for global health.

Bush called Bono "an amazing guy," and praised him for being "a doer."

"He's used his position to get things done," the president said.

The breakfast had a decidedly ecumenical feel with Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman, serving as the first Jewish Senator ever to co-chair the event. Several speakers noted the presence of Jordan's King Abdullah, a Muslim, in the audience.

While lauding Americans who "opened up their hearts and their homes to the displaced" in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Bush said Americans also looked beyond their borders to show generosity.

"We saw an outpouring of compassion after the earthquake in Pakistan and the tsunami (in Southeast Asia) that devastated entire communities. We live up to God's calling when we provide help for HIV/AIDS victims on the continent of Africa and around the world," he said.

Grammy Awards divide dance floor

NEW YORK- Nothing highlights the divisions within the dance music community more thoroughly than the annual announcement of the Grammy Award nominees. And no group has been quite so divided as the class of 2005.

In one corner, are the pure of heart: the chart-flouting, music-first, dance/electronic careerists, for whom pop crossover success is neither a requirement nor a goal.

Grammy has not been historically kind to this crew. In 2000, for example, poster boy Moby shared the best dance recording category with bubble-pop outfits like Eiffel 65, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias. All lost to Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out." Woof.

On the far side of the ring are the pragmatists: the hit-hungry, radio-loving business people who see dance as stunted by its unwillingness to embrace pop. But it does not do them any good to have pop stars like Cher, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson claim best dance recording prizes either, eclipsing artists groomed for dance-specific success: It seems a bit like letting pro athletes compete in the Olympics.

The twain shall never meet for these two groups, and last year, it did not have to. The best electronic/dance album category debuted, after years of lobbying by electro-stars like BT and the Crystal Method's Ken Jordan. Basement Jaxx won for the noisy, unapologetic "Kish Kash," and the purists seemed content, finally gaining a Grammy foothold.

Meanwhile, the 8-year-old best remixed recording, non-classical category chugged along as scheduled. It added soon-to-be Madonna producer Jacques Lu Cont to the pantheon of honored remixers, for No Doubt's "It's My Life." He joined Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Club 69 (Peter Rauhofer), Hex Hector, Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez and Maurice Joshua, all of whom snagged golden gramophones for their work on major pop hits, pleasing the chart-watchers.

But this year, things are askew. It is flat-out impossible for a popster to win best dance recording. In fact, odds are that a regular dance hero could pull it off. Old-guard members the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Deep Dish; new pioneer LCD Soundsystem; and classic band New Order are all nominated. Yes, Kylie Minogue snuck in there too . . . but for a Scissor Sisters-produced track. Advantage: the electron-istas.

For best remixed recording, times have suddenly become tough for the pop apologists. Lu Cont is nominated again, this time for the Killers' "Mr. Brightside," but his fellow nominees are head-scratchers: practically unknown "nu skool" breaks pioneer Adam Freeland, for a quirky Sarah Vaughan remix; Guetta & Garraud, for their underplayed rerub of Deep Dish's "Flashdance"; the overdue Louie Vega, for a compilation-only release (Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly"); and industrial mainstays Meat Beat Manifesto, for a Tower of Power remix, of all things. Advantage: Nobody. And that really is unfortunate, all metaphoric bouts aside.

It is great that best dance recording is finally honoring dance artists, not vacationing pop stars. And the new album category is long overdue and on the right track.

But the remixer category was always where we could honor the producers who translated mainstream music into the utilitarian language of the dancefloor; studio wizards who used bombast and beats to illicit emotion rather than thought, which might be the essence of dance music.

It was also where we quietly paid tribute to overlooked heroes. Did Joshua win in 2003 for his classy Beyonce remix alone, or also for 1988 underground classic "This Is Acid?" If Ralphi Rosario was nominated this year, would it have been only for his delightfully catty Pussycat Dolls remix, or for the 1987 super-classic "You Used to Hold Me?"

By changing the nature of the category, the Recording Academy is eliminating dance's ability to honor its own and devaluing the power and complexity (or blissful, elusive simplicity) of a successful pop remix.

Pryor, Weavers among honorary Grammy winners

LOS ANGELES -A diverse group of entertainers, including late comedian Richard Pryor, opera singer Jessye Norman and Island Records mogul Chris Blackwell, received honorary Grammy statuettes on Tuesday, the eve of the music industry's biggest night of the year.

Also feted during the low-key event that often ran high on emotion were folk group the Weavers, Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, rock icon David Bowie, country outlaw Merle Haggard, rock trio Cream, Nashville producer Owen Bradley and engineers Al Schmitt and Tom Dowd.

U2 singer Bono made a surprise appearance to sing the praises of Blackwell, who signed his group to Island after many other labels turned them down. He praised Blackwell's willingness to let musicians take risks without corporate interference or fear of getting dropped.

"If U2 arrived right now, in the current climate, we would not have gotten past our second album, and I think that's kinda sad. I especially think it's very sad, because we're doing very well now," he said, to laughter.

Blackwell, who also signed such acts as Bob Marley, Roxy Music, Marianne Faithfull and Traffic, replied his only contribution to U2's success was that he "pretty much stood out of the way."

Pryor, the iconoclastic comic who died of complications from multiple sclerosis in December, was represented by his widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor. She recalled that when her husband was informed he would be getting the award, he replied, "It's about f---in' time."

The award came too late for Johnson, "the king of the Delta blues," who was murdered in 1938, aged 27. Although he recorded just 29 compositions, they redefined the blues and are treated as the holy grail by generations of rock stars. He was represented by his son, Claude, who only in recent years was recognized as Johnson's sole, true heir.

دليل شما برای اين انتخاب چی بوده؟

اليسون نيل: معمولا تا دو سه مقاله در مورد کسی نخونم اون رو جزء آدمهای مهم سال درنظر نمی گيرم. در مورد گروه آريان هم همين شد

در يکسال گذشته چند تا مقاله درباره اين گروه به زبان انگليسی نوشته شده بود. اتفاقا يکی از مقاله ها از بی بی سی بود در باره اينکه آريان اولين گروه مختلط ايرانيه که آلبوم داره و کنسرت می ده. برای من خيلی جالب بود.

در نسخه سال ۲۰۰۶ ليست جهانی شخصيتهای مهم دنيا، اسم گروه آريان و مختصری درباره گروه، چاپ خواهد شد

فرهنگ شريف گفت كه منتظر بازگشت محمدرضا شجريان از خارج از كشور است تا اين دودر قالب يك آلبوم موسيقي با هم همكاري كنند
